Philosophy or Literature? : I have always had a keen interest in English Literature, but due to my low percentage I couldn't get a college in DU. Now I am filling forms of universities like JU, JMI, and AMU. But I am a bit insecure, like if I am not selected in any of it, I'd give a chance to Philosophy. Now my question is how is Philosophy as a subject and career option? I'd probably prepare for a test like UPSC or SSC, but still if I can't clear such hectic subject, can I be assured that I have a good career in Philosophy too?

Dear student,

After studying either English & Philospohy, a multitude of jobs options will open up. Unless you decide to pursue the Masters course in the same subject, the options at the Masters level can be similar. If you are interested in studying further, you can opt for Professional courses like:

  • Journalism & Mass Communication
  • PR
  • Gender Studies
  • MBA
  • Civil Services
  • Animation/ Graphic Design & other Design related fields
  • Analytics

If you are looking at job options after pursuing Philosophy, then you may want to look at the following career options:

  • IT – particularly, but not only, if you enjoy the logic side of Philosophy
  • Law – like Philosophy, involves applying general principles to particular situations in the real world, and constructing arguments
  • Civil Service – advising on policy, involves analysing pros and cons of different courses of action
  • Management Consultancy – analysing performances of businesses and how to improve them
  • Professional Writing - if you have a creative bent of mind and have a flair for writing, then you can explore various avenues of professional writing
