Lay the Groundwork: April 2020 and September 2020

The first thing that you need to do when planning on pursuing your higher education in Australia is finding all about the country, its education system, the right program and university for you, and so on. The more you research the easier it will be for you to get through the entire transition from one country to another. 

What you need to be able to do while exploring your options are finding out the top Australian universities, their tuition fees, if they offer scholarships, what is the application deadline for international students, when the session will begin, what are the application requirements, among other things. Make sure you make a list of at least 8-12 universities/ institutions in Australia that have your programme of choice on offer. 

Take Standardised and English Proficiency Tests: June 2020 and August 2020

Now that you have made note of all the admissions criteria for the different universities that you’ve shortlisted, you can appear for the admission and/ or standardised tests that they accept. 

Both IELTS and TOEFL are widely accepted at Australian universities for both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. Some may also accept scores of PTE Academic

Enrolling in graduate programme in Australia would further require you to take the GMAT or GRE

For admission to programmes in the fields of medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and physiotherapy at Australian universities, you would be required to submit the scores of the International Student Admissions Test (ISAT). 

In case you are applying for Vocational education and training (VET), Australian VET institutions do not usually ask for scores of any entrance exam. However, some may require a prior academic/ professional background in the area.

Apply to Shortlisted Universities: August 2020 and October 2020

If you are applying for undergraduate courses, you will have to submit the Indian equivalent of Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (10+2). Some universities may also demand prior study in specific subjects that you are applying for.

For postgraduate courses, you must have completed at least one degree at the undergraduate level. Prior research or relevant work experience may also be required.

Of the top, the documents that you will have to provide along with your application would include certificates of your previous study or work experience (translated into English), evidence of English language proficiency, Statement of Purpose (SOP) and letters of recommendation.

Bide Your Time: November 2020 to December 2020

Here, all you need to do is wait for your Letter of Offer. Once you are done with applying to your choice of institutions, your selection would be evidenced by a Letter of Offer. To confirm the same, you would have to respond by signing and sending the letter back to the university either by mail or email. 

Before confirming your acceptance, read the letter thoroughly and have a clear understanding of everything that it says. Also, make a copy of it for your reference. You would also be required to pay your deposit, after which you will receive an ‘Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment’ (eCoE) by email, which will contain details such as start date of the course, total course fees, total duration of the course, and more.

Apply for Your Visa and Organise Your Finances: December 2020 to January 2021

Done with the major aspect of the process? Now, you can start with your application which has the following requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in a course at an Australian university.

  • Must have an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

  • If you are under 18, you must submit proof of a welfare arrangement.

Here is a list of requirements in order to get an Australian student visa:

  • An electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) certificate

  • Meeting the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement

  • Proof of sufficient funds 

  • English language proficiency scores

  • Fulfilling the health and character requirements

  • Evidence of Overseas Student Health Cover 

With the visa, you would be able to take up the course of study and take your family members with you to Australia.
