DLIs With Approved COVID-19 Readiness Plans For Int'l Students to Enter Canada

By Subhashri Roy Updated On - Jan 25, 2021 01:25 PM

International students can now enter Canada only if they have been accepted to a designated learning institution (DLI) with an approved Covid-19 readiness plan. Check out the list of DLIs in the eight Canadian provinces including Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia.

Latest Update: A total of 490 DLIs in Ontario have had their Covid-19 readiness plans approved.

As of October 20, international students who have been accepted to a designated learning institution (DLI) and hold a Canadian study permit have been allowed to enter the country.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, which is Canada’s immigration agency, has released a list of DLIs with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan in various Canadian provinces including Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia.

On October 8, the IRCC advised both returning and prospective international students to make travel arrangements only after they have got all authorisations and met all requirements under the new rules.

This article would give a detailed knowledge of what a DLI is, measures taken by the Canadian government to ensure the safety of international students and the list of DLIs in the nine provinces of Canada.

What is a DLI?

A DLI is an institution or education provider that has been identified as having a Covid-19 readiness plan in place by their territorial or provincial government. The government of Canada has issued a list of 1,548 DLIs across all the Canadian provinces except Nunavut.

Each of these institutions has been carefully put on the list only after their plan has been approved.

As of November 17, only 56 out of 482 institutions in Ontario for their plans approved. On the other hand, 427 out of 436 Quebec’s institutions have approved readiness plans. British Columbia has 81 out of a total of 266 DLIs with approved plans.

Study in Canada Amid Covid-19 in 2021-22

Wondering why one should study in Canada when most countries continue to keep their borders closed to international students? Given below are the measures taken the government to make sure that foreign students enter Canada safely:

  • The Canadian government has made it mandatory for students to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

  • An app has been introduced - ArriveCan, through which the government has been keeping track of all travellers. After arrival, students must, therefore, provide all required details including contact information and self-assessments during quarantine via the app.

  • Travellers must pass a pre-boarding health check conducted by the respective airlines.

  • Students entering Canada must prove their eligibility for health care coverage in Canada. In case they are not covered, they must avail private insurance (including Covid-19 coverage) before arriving in Canada.

  • Anyone who breaks quarantine rules may have to pay a fine of up to CAD 750,000 or be sentenced to six months in jail.
