If you are planning to study in New Zealand, you must in the first place know that there are two intakes in New Zealand i.e February intake and July intake. While international students apply for admissions for both the terms, the July intake is their preferred choice and most admissions happen in this session.

New Zealand universities are constantly ranked high in the QS World Univesity Rankings, making it one of the most prudent study abroad destinations today. Its research-based teaching, globally-recognised qualifications, multi-cultural environment, flexible study-work regulations make the country all the more suitable for international students. 

Although there are no defined application deadlines to apply to New Zealand universities in the July intake, one must analyse the timeline and submit the application along with other requirements at least four-five months before classes are scheduled to commence. Applying at the universities of New Zealand is a time-consuming process. It takes almost 8 to 10 months to complete the application process. Applicants are advised to start preparing for July intake in August of the previous year. A detailed timeline is explained below:

August 2020 to December 2020: Shortlist Universities

Following guidelines will help you choose the right colleges for higher education abroad and within time: 

  • It is advisable to start planning for study abroad at least 8 to 10 months before the commencement of the session. 

  • If you are planning to take admission in July 2021 Intake of New Zealand you must shortlist the universities and courses by December 2020. 

  • You must confirm detailed eligibility criteria, admission process, fee structure, important dates and other necessary information of specific university.

December 2020  to February 2021: Appear for Exams

Universities accept entrance exam scorecards to enrol students for admission in under various degree programmes. Both academic and English Language test scores are required to apply for admission at universities. Various tests include GRE, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL or PTE. So, once the university is shortlisted candidates must start preparing for the test as early as possible. 

  • Prepare and appear for the test at designated test centres by February 2021 so that there is enough time to collect the scorecard for uploading at a specific institute.

  • Ensure to prepare well for the tests so as to score maximum marks in both academic and English language test. 

  • The eligibility criteria for entrance test may vary for different institutes. So, one must cross-check the eligibility criteria for admission and appear for test accordingly. 

  • Also, draft a Statement of Purpose(SOP) and collect Letter of Recommendations and other documents like transcripts to be submitted with the application within this time period. 

February 2021 to March 2021- Apply at Universities

Once you have appeared in tests, start applying at universities. It is highly recommended to apply as early as possible to receive an early response from the university. The guidelines to apply for admissions is as follows:

  • Ensure to confirm deadline dates of respective universities and submit the application before the defined dates.

  • Applications are accepted online. Visit the official website of the university and access the online application form for a specific course.

  • Keep all the required documents ready to be uploaded with the application form. It includes a transcript, letter of recommendation, CV, Statement of Purpose, etc.

March 2021 to April 2021: Accept the Offer

The university will send an Offer Letter on the registered email ID on the acceptance of admission. The admission is confirmed only when the offer letter and terms and conditions mentioned in the offer letter is accepted. Once you have applied at the university follow the points mentioned below for updates on admission process:

  • Ensure to keep checking the official portal of the university. You can log in to the account and track the status of the application.

  • Keep checking the registered Email Id for latest updates on admission. All communication related to admission is done through the registered Email ID.

  • Do not miss to accept the offer once it is received from the university. Read carefully all the terms and conditions before accepting the offer letter for admission.

  • Some universities may ask you to make an initial tuition fee payment to confirm admission. In such a case, make payment and receive the payment receipt.

  • If there are any pending documents, ensure to submit it to the university before the deadline date. 

April 2021 to July 2021: Apply for Student Visa and Education Loans

Once the final admission is confirmed at one of the universities of New Zealand you must apply for a student visa to travel and education loans (if required).

  • Check details on the official New Zealand Student Visa web page and apply for a student visa.

  • Make payment for New Zealand student visa as defined by the authorities.

  • You must have a valid offer letter, valid passport, educational documents, financial documents ready while applying for a student visa.

June 2021 to July 2021: Plan your Travel

As classes commence in July, you must book your tickets beforehand and plan your visit to the UK by June 2021. Following are the tips to help you plan your travel to New Zealand for higher education:

  • Before arrival in the country, book your residential stay whether it is on-campus or off-campus.

  • Book flight tickets as early as possible at a cheaper rate. So, so soon as the visa is approved and documents are ready, book the flight ticket.

  • Carry all the necessary documents at the airport like passport stamped with visa, offer letter, educational document etc.
