Every year, thousands of international students apply to US universities with a Summer intake that usually begins in May and ends in August. Generally, not preferred by many due to the popularity of the Spring and Fall intakes, the Summer intake also has a handful of top US universities offering admission. 

Many students drop an entire year when they fail to get admission during the Fall or Spring admission cycles due to several reasons, one of which is lack of information and inability to find enough good universities in the US with Summer intake.

Timeline for May 2022 Intake in the USA 

Here is the overview of the timeline for the Summer 2022 intake, which would all in all take around a year:




(April-Aug 2021)

Find out which universities offer Summer intake, if your course of choice is on offer and what the admission requirements are

Take the Required Standardised Tests 

(Sept-Nov 2021)

Attempt the required tests such as the GMAT, GRE, SAT, ACT, LSAT, TOEFL, IELTS, or any other.

Apply to Universities 

(Nov 2021- March 2022)

Apply to universities and submit required documents

Wait for Your Admission Decision 

(Feb-March 2022)

Wait for the universities to respond to your application

Apply for Visa and Arrange your FInances

(April-May 2022)

Step-By-Step Guide For Summer 2022 Intake In The US

As big an undertaking studying abroad is, it is also a major decision that needs a well-planned timeline and careful decision making. Here is the timeline for the Summer 2022 intake in the US: 

Explore All Options: April-August 2021

Although only fewer universities as compared to the Fall or Spring intake, you need to do thorough research on which universities you can apply to. Also, given the current circumstances due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is recommended that you pick universities or colleges that are “safe” or have been able to manage to deliver quality education despite the pandemic. 

While shortlisting US universities with Summer intake, make sure they offer the course you are planning on pursuing and the mode of delivery they will be adopting for the intake. Once you have a list of a handful of universities that meet your requirements and have a brief idea about their admission process, you can move on to the next step. 

Also, note down the application deadlines of these universities. Usually, Summer universities in the US open their application window between the months of November and March.

Attempt Required Admission Tests: September-November 2021

Now that you are aware of all the requirements of your selected universities, you can attempt the required tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, TOEFL, IELTS or any other which is applicable. 

Although test centres have been reopened, most of these tests are being administered in online mode. In case you are unable to take the test, many universities have been offering test waivers in view of the global pandemic. 

Scores of these tests are usually released within 5 to 7 days from the test date.

Apply to Universities: November 2021 to March 2022

You may start applying to the universities that you listed down in the first step. In case the application window has not opened, you can wait and apply by March 2022.

  • Application fee

  • CV

  • Transcripts or records of grades (high school and/or university)

  • Admission test scores (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, etc.)

  • Letters of Recommendation 

  • Proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS or any other)

  • Statement of Purpose

  • Writing sample

  • Passport photo

Wait for Universities to Respond: February-March 2022

You can sit back and only wait for the admission decision. Usually, US universities take around a month to either accept or decline your application although you might have to wait longer. You may also contact the university to know the status of your application, which would otherwise be notified via email. 

Apply for US Student Visa, Education Loan or Scholarships: April-May 2022

Now that you have your letter of acceptance in hand, you can apply for a US Student visa. Also, make sure that yours in a SEVP-approved school, which is a prerequisite for you to be issued a visa. Generally, a visa is granted within 3 to 5 weeks from the date of application.

Also, the ideal time to apply for an education loan would be now (if required). You can evaluate how much the tuition fees and living expenses would cost you and apply for a loan accordingly.

Most US universities consider international students for scholarships automatically through their admission applications. However, you may be required to fill out a separate application form and submit the same along with the required documents.

Fly to the US: May 2022

Find out if the US borders have opened for international students for the Summer intake 2022. If not, then you might have to commence your studies from your home country and then transfer to campus once the situation returns to normalcy. The majority of US universities have adopted a blended model of instruction- a combination of both in-person and face-to-face learning.
