Candidates planning to take the IELTS exam must read the detailed registration process before actually booking their slots and giving the exam. The registration for the IELTS exam can be done either online or offline. 

Online registration can be done through the official website of IELTS and it is the most prefered and convenient method of completing an IELTS registration. However, the offline registration process option is also available.

IELTS Exam Registration 2022 - Steps to Register

For those looking to appear for the IELTS exam in 2022, here are the steps for IELTS online registration process that must be completed:

Step 1: Visit the Official website of IELTS India

To register for an IELTS test online one must visit the official website for IELTS India and go to the registration section. The direct link for IELTS IDP India's official website has been provided below.

Step 2: Select the Type of Test, City and Date

On the IELTS registration page, select the appropriate IELTS test like IELTS CBT or IELTS PBT, choose the IELTS test type i.e IELTS Academics or IELTS General Training and then move on to selecting the preferred city for taking the test and view the available IELTS test dates.

Step 3: Confirm the Test Date

Based on the availability of slots, book the preferred IELTS test date and time slot. Once the date and time have been selected, confirm the terms and conditions and proceed with the registration process.

Step 4: Add Personal Details

Under the personal details, tab add details such as the name, date of birth, a valid email ID, contact number and ID Document Number and proceed.

Step 5: Add Registration Details

After personal details are added proceed by adding registration details like the address, educational qualification, reasons for taking the test, etc.

Step 6: Upload Documents

Once personal and registration details are added, you will be asked to upload the first and last page of your passport. It is mandatory to hold a passport to appear in an IELTS test. The size of the document should not be more than 1MB and it must be saved in JPG, JPEG, PNG, or PDF format.

Step 7: Select Recognised Organisation

In this step, you can select the list of IELTS-accepting organisations or universities where you want to send the IELTS Score Card. The scorecard will be sent directly to the selected institutions from the test centres. However, this step is optional and candidates can opt to skip selecting the institutes.

Step 8: Review the Application

Once the details of the above-mentioned steps are added, the candidate must review the entered details and make the necessary changes before finally submitting the application.

Step 9: Make Payment

In the last step, the applicant must make the payment of the application fees for IELTS registration and submit the application.

Other Modes of IELTS Registration

Interested applicants can also choose to register for IELTS in other methods apart from online modes. Currently, IDP India allows students to register for IELTS via In-person method or by Courier. Listed below are the additional methods for IELTS registration that you can choose from.

In-Person (Input Node) IELTS Registration

All interested candidates can choose to walk into any IDP branch or head office nearest to you. IDP has further divided this method into two sub-methods, as detailed below:

Online IELTS Registration at IDP Office/Branch: Candidates can use the computer at the IDP branch or office and complete the online registration and get an immediate seat confirmation.

Offline IELTS Registration at IDP Office/Branch: Aspirants can also fill out the IELTS application form which will be available at the office and submit the form with the necessary documents and pay the application fee via Debit/Credit card, Demand Draft or Depositing Cash in an ICICI branch.

Note: If you choose the offline mode for IELTS registration at an IDP office or branch in India, then make sure you request the staff for an acknowledgement slip of your IELTS test registration as well as a tentative seat reservation.

IELTS Registration by Courier

Interested applicants can also choose to send in their IELTS registration form via courier to the specified address for IDP IELTS India. You can either download the IELTS application form from the official website or procure it from an IELTS IDP branch or office. Here is the process of sending in your IELTS application form via mail or courier.

  • Fill out the IELTS registration form and submit a duly signed Terms and Conditions document.

  • Submit the required documents such as your passport and observation pages, if applicable.

  • Affix a DD of the applicable IELTS registration fee, drawn in favour of ‘IDP Education India Private Limited’, payable at New Delhi. The DD should be made to any one of the approved banks as listed in the Terms and Conditions document.

  • You can also deposit cash at any ICICI bank branch, subsequently attaching the customer copy of the ICICI deposit slip.

Note: Before sending in your application form with the necessary documents, it is advised to read the Terms and Conditions document thoroughly.

IELTS Exam Fee

Included in the registration process, all candidates are required to pay the IELTS exam fee. Candidates need to pay INR 15,500 for both the IELTS Computer-based and Pen and Paper-based tests to complete the registration process for an IELTS test 2022. The payment for IELTS registration fee can be made through any one of the following methods:

Online Registration: Online payment using credit or debit card or net banking.

Offline Registration: Offline payment can be done by the following method:

  • Sending Demand Draft (DD) in favour of "IDP EDUCATION INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED, New Delhi". DD must be from a list of approved banks, listed on the official website for IELTS.

  • Cash can also be deposited at different ICICI or Allahabad bank branches. The deposit slip can be downloaded from the IELTS IDP website or collected from the nearest branch of IELTS IDP.

Note: In case the payment is done offline, the deposit slip must be uploaded within the IELTS application form.

IELTS Rescheduling or Cancellation

An IELTS test can be cancelled or rescheduled under certain terms and conditions. Here are the conditions under which a candidate can cancel or reschedule the IELTS exam.

1. Request for cancellation or rescheduling of IELTS Test

The applicant who wishes to cancel or reschedule the IELTS test must request for the same by writing a letter and attaching a proof of payment at the following address:

 2. Request for Transfer of Test Date (IELTS PBT)

The request for the transfer of test can be made by submitting the “Transfer, Cancellation Application Form”. The form must reach the centre at least five weeks prior to the original date of the test.

The next date will be allocated based on the availability of date and time and after confirmation by the centre.

3. Request for Transfer of Test Date (IELTS CBT)

The request for transfer of an IELTS CBT test can be made by submitting the “Transfer, Cancellation Application Form” and must reach the centre at least three weeks prior to the original test date.

There is an additional charge that the applicant will be asked to pay to postpone the IELTS CBT test, which is finalised at INR 3330.

4. Refund of Amount

In case an IELTS test is cancelled, the amount will be processed and refunded to the candidate within 30 days from the date of the original test.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During IELTS Registration

While the IELTS registration process may seem straightforward and simple, there are certain parameters and mistakes you can make when registering for the test. Listed below are some of the common mistakes to avoid during test registration.

  • Not Giving Enough Preparation Time: One of the major mistakes individuals make when registering for the test is not giving themselves enough time for preparation. While you can prepare properly before registering for the test, in some cases, it is better to register first in order to avoid losing out on the perfect date and time.

  • Close to the Deadline: While it may seem logical to attempt the test a few days or weeks before the application deadline, it will often work as a trap. It is always better to complete your IELTS registration at least 1-2 months before the university application deadline. This will allow you to attempt the test again if you yield unsatisfactory results.

  • Spelling Mistakes: While it may seem small, spelling errors can cause major problems either on the day of the test or when it comes to submitting the documents to your desired university.

  • Using Wrong Documents: As per regulations, candidates will need a valid passport to register and appear for the test. Therefore, during the IELTS registration process, make sure you use the details provided on the passport, as you will be using your passport to identify yourself on the day of the test.

FAQs on IELTS Registration

How to apply for IELTS Indicator?

Visit the official IELTS British council website. Under the IELTS Indicator section, select the book now option, select country, test date and register. You may take the IELTS Indicator on any competent desktop computer or laptop with sufficient internet connectivity. You must finish the Listening, Reading, and Writing in one sitting. The Speaking test will take place either a few days before or after the Listening, Reading, and Writing tests.

What additional charges are charged for rescheduling the IELTS Test date?

Candidates must choose a new test date within three months of the scheduled exam date. For the transfer of the test date, candidates must pay an additional charge charged for rescheduling the IELTS test date with a fee of INR 3,300, inclusive of all taxes. Candidates can only reschedule the IELTS exam once.

How long does it take to take to receive the refund in case IELTS is cancelled?

If you cancel your IELTS exam up to five weeks before the test date (IELTS on Paper), you will get a refund less a 25% administrative charge. Please keep in mind that refunds might take four to six weeks to complete. If you cancel your IELTS test registration on the test day or after the exam, there will be no reimbursement.

I need to cancel IELTS. Will I receive the refund?

If you cancel your IELTS test more than five weeks before the test date, you will receive a refund after deducting the administration charge. You can cancel your IELTS exam and receive a refund from the British Council. If you cancel your test between 14 and 5 days before the scheduled date, you will receive a refund of 50% of the total test charge. Cancellations made after this time will not be refunded.

How to reschedule an IELTS Test?

You can reschedule your IELTS exam only if the test date is at least 15 days after the day you request for transfer. However, you can postpone for up to 34 days without giving a reason. All candidates can reschedule their IELTS test by sending in a request form to the IELTS office. There will be additional charges for rescheduling the test. The request form must reach the IELTS office at least three weeks prior to the original test date.

What details are required to register for IELTS?

The only document required for IELTS registration is your passport number and some of its data. Candidates will be required to provide basic details like their name, age, educational qualifications, address, email ID, contact number, etc at the time of IELTS registration and upload a copy of their passport along with a recent photograph. Taking the IELTS indicates that you want to study abroad or immigrate.

What documents are needed to apply for IELTS?

You must provide a photocopy of your passport (first and final page) and any observation pages to the IDP Head Office (address provided below). If you do not meet these requirements, you will not be permitted to take the test. On the day of the exam, candidates must bring their actual passport.

Can I apply for IELTS offline?

Yes, all candidates can apply for IELTS offline by visiting the nearest IDP Education India Pvt Ltd offices. You can collect the application form, fill it, make payment through DD or depositing cash at ICICI or Allahabad banks and attach the deposit slip with the form. You can also download the application form, fill the same and submit it to the nearest IDP office.

What are the payment methods to pay the application fee while register for the IELTS online?

IELTS online payment methods to pay the application fee while registering for the IELTS online are:
1. Netbanking and credit/debit cards. (Visa or MasterCard)
2. Bank deposit - Applicants can deposit cash in ICICI/HDFC bank branches using a customised deposit slip printed from the IELTS IDP India website.
3. Demand Draft - Please ensure that the demand draught is written in the name of "IDP EDUCATION INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED, Payable at New Delhi" and is drawn from one of the recognised banks.
