IELTS Test Centres in India

The IELTS exam is conducted at 77 official test centres across India. However, the Computer-Based Test and the Paper-Based Test are conducted at specific test centres in India and are accepted by leading universities such as Hofstra University, Harvard University, MIT, University of Dayton, University of Essex, Dublin City University, etc.

At the time of registering for the IELTS exam, candidates will be asked to select the state and city to book the appropriate venue. Candidates are advised to select the test centre closest to their location.

The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of the IELTS exam are conducted on the same day with no break in between at the same centre. However, the Speaking section is scheduled for another day with the date and timing confirmed via email at least 48 to 72 hours in advance.

IELTS COVID-19 Updates

IELTS test centres are now open with strict Covid-19 precautions. On the day of the test, the candidate will have to go through the following procedure to ensure the safety for all.

  • The temperature of each person will be checked and recorded.

  • All candidates will have to wear a mask that must cover their nose and mouth appropriately. Only for identification purposes will a candidate be asked to remove the mask. 

  • Each candidate will have to maintain a distance of 2 metres.

  • Basic hygiene practice like the use of sanitizers and washing of one's hands, among other practices are to be followed at the test centre.

  • Equipment at each test centre will be sanitised before the start of each test.

  • Designated bins for disposal of masks will be available at test centres.

  • Candidates who experience any COVID-19 symptoms are requested not to visit the centre on the day of the test and inform the authorities.

Facilities Available for Physically Challenged Person at the IELTS Test Centres

The officials at IELTS test centres are available to help candidates with visual, hearing, speaking or listening impediments. In case a candidate needs help at the test centre, they must inform the authorities at least six months before taking the test. Those who need a modified version of the IELTS exam must give notice to the test centre at least three months before taking the test.

Special arrangements such as extra time to attempt the questions are also available for candidates who present relevant medical documents. The English language abilities of the candidate will be analysed objectively regardless of any disabilities or special arrangement asked for by the candidate.

Can I Change the IELTS Test Centre?

The request for change of test centre for the IELTS test can be made by sending an email at ielts.india@idp.com. In case, the request is accepted, the authorities will send an acknowledgement mail to the candidate confirming the changed venue, date and time. However, the request must be made at least five weeks before taking the test.

What to Bring to an IELTS Test Centre?

Along with identification documents, there are certain other important things that all IELTS test-takers must or must not bring to their designated test centre:

  • All candidates must bring either their passport or national ID, depending on the one they used while registering for the IELTS.

  • The staff at the test centre will check the identification document before letting one enter and take the test.

  • For the paper-based test, candidates are allowed to bring pens, pencils and erasers. However, for the computer-delivered test, paper and pencils are provided for all.

  • It is okay to bring a mobile phone, but one should switch it off and place it with their other personal belongings in a special area arranged at the test centre.

  • Students are recommended not to bring any valuable items on the test day.

  • Candidates do not need to bring passport photos of them on test day. The staff at the test centre will take every candidate's photo as part of their registration process.

There are a total of 75 official IELTS test cities across India. 

2. Where is the IELTS Test conducted in India? 

IELTS is conducted in a number of major cities in India like Bangalore, Pune, Gurgaon, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai and many more. The test centres for PBT and CBT are defined separately and can be selected at the time of registration.

3. How to check the availability of test centres in India? 

Candidates can confirm the availability of the test centre on a specific date at the time of their IELTS registration on the official website. The test is conducted at multiple locations in different states throughout the year.

4. What does ID verification at an IELTS test centre include?     

You must bring your ID to your designated IELTS test centre. It should be the same ID that you used to book the test and should be original, valid (unexpired) and include a recognisable photo of yourself.

5. Can I take IELTS at home?

Yes, IELTS has introduced a new concept called the IELTS Indicator for candidates who wish to take IELTS at home to complete their admission process at universities abroad. The test can be taken by any candidate who cannot take the test at different test centres, especially during COVID-19 lockdowns.

6. What if IELTS is not administered in my city?    

IELTS is conducted in all major Indian locations and you may book any test centre nearest to you. It is recommended that you book an appointment as early as possible to miss out on your preferred test centre and date. 

7. What are the facilities available for special candidates at IELTS test centres?

Special arrangements will be available at IELTS test centres for candidates with relevant medical documents. Extra time to attempt questions, special sitting arrangements, equipment etc., will be provided to candidates with visual, hearing impairment or other medical or physical challenges.

8. Is the IELTS speaking test conducted on the same day at the test centre?

IELTS speaking test will be conducted on a different date and time date and venue and will be communicated to the candidate via email and/or SMS.

9. Can I change my IELTS test centre after registration?

Yes, all candidates can change their IELTS Test centre after being registered. However, the request for an IELTS Test centre change must be made at least five weeks before taking the test.
