Canada Introduces 'Contigency Plans' for Visa Delays, Indian Students Asked to Find Remote Options

Numerous Indian students who are enrolled in Canadian colleges and are set to start their academic courses in September are facing challenges due to delays in student visas. The High Commission of India based in Ottawa has urged the authorities to speed up the processing of visa applications.

Last week, the Canadian HC in India assured it was working hard to reduce the waiting time for Canada study permits. They have been reviewing applications throughout the year including Canada student visas for the September intake 2022.

The HCI emphasised that students have already deposited their university tuition fees. Canada is putting contingency plans into action for students who have not yet received their study permits. The issue has also been notified to the relevant ministry.

Some universities in Canada have decided to provide remote study options to students who are unable to reach the country at the beginning of the academic course. Students are directed to find out the best possible options by communicating with the universities.

HCI also said in the advisory that students can talk directly to the institutions to know if their courses have remote options or not. They are also asked to discuss the other possible options in case there are no remote study facilities. Those students who are wishing to defer their admission to a later academic session can communicate with the universities.

The Commission has further directed distressed students to send requests for information and speedy processing through an IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) web form designed for study permits notifying them that the forms for study permits have been submitted and have exceeded the time for Student Direct Stream (SDS) scheme.

India is an approved country on the IRCC website and is supposed to get study permits in 20 days if they apply through the SDS route. Several students apply through this route which requires them to pay tuition fees for the first year so that they can receive visas fast. The parents of students who have pending visas requested universities to conduct online classes.
