IRCC is willing to invite over 430,000 Canada PR applicants in 2022 as the country is hard-hit by a large number of job vacancies as per the Labour Force Survey for May 2022.

For the year 2024, the Canadian government has set a target of 450,000. As the country’s indigenous labour force retires with a low unemployment rate, various sectors in the country are recording increasing vacancies in payroll jobs.

According to the Survey of Employment, Payroll, and Hours, as of May 2022, 26,000 jobs are no longer on the payroll. The number of employees receiving payroll and benefits has decreased from May 2021.

Service-producing sectors of educational services, healthcare, and social assistance have been impacted the most. They are looking at a loss of over 17,000 payroll positions.

The construction sector has also registered a decrease of over 17,500 payroll jobs since July 2021.

The job vacancy rate in the social services sector has risen from 5.4% in April to 6.1% and reports a total of 143,000 vacancies, which is 20% higher than the job vacancy rate recorded in May 2021.

Nova Scotia and Manitoba recorded a 10% job vacancy rate each. The sector most hard hit was accommodation and food services with 161,000 reported vacancies.

Among all, Ontario is suffering the biggest job losses in the retail trade sector. Ontario and Manitoba are facing job vacancies of 30,000 and 2,500 respectively.

The Labour Force Survey 2022 has also confirmed that several sectors in the country will continue to face labour shortages in the upcoming years. As a result, Canada is looking forward to fulfilling its labour force requirements through immigrants.

A target of inviting at least 450,000 permanent residents has been set for 2024 while 430,000 PR invites are already confirmed for 2022. These invites shall be issued under various programmes such as Canada Express Entry and Canada PNP.

Meanwhile, the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services sector has turned out to be the only sector to see a growth in jobs. The sector recorded a growth of over 10,000 jobs, concentrated on computer system designs and related tech positions.
