China has Begun to Permit the Resettlement of Indian Students

Latest Update (May 26, 2022) -As per the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China is working with India to resolve particular issues and make arrangements for eligible Indian students to relocate to China as early as possible.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry had earlier stated that it hoped India would offer a list of Indian students who had a genuine need to return to China. Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was asked if there is a deadline for their admittance, given that the list was submitted a while ago.

Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China, said that the Chinese side recognises the immediate need for Indian students to return to China and resume their studies.

To ensure effective disease prevention and control, China would make adequate accommodations for Indian students to resume their studies smoothly. Since the onset of the coronavirus epidemic, China has made it easier for foreign nationals who have legitimate reasons to return to the country.

If they have such demands, Indian professionals working in China can petition appropriate Chinese authorities for family reunions, Wang added.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, said the government would continue to encourage China to make efforts to help Indian students.

Students who are required to return and squeeze opportunities, such as those in medical school, are able to do so and no longer suffer as a result of these constraints.

At the same time, 200 Pakistani students have been selected for visa issuance by the authorities. About 7,000 Pakistani students are waiting to return to China, making the news slightly disappointing for all the students waiting to return to their classes.

On the other hand, over 20,000 Indian students are still waiting to return to their universities in China since coming back in 2019 due to the pandemic. The Zero Covid Policy of China at the start of the pandemic had led to the suspension of foreign and international students' travel in the country.

May 2, 2022-Concerns expressed by Indian students regarding returning to China for education are taken seriously. At a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that they have communicated with the Indian side about the procedures and experience of other nations' students returning to China.

China is aware that there are a high number of Indian students in the country and India may require some time to compile the list of names. Under the current, difficult, and serious pandemic scenario, China is prepared to accept some Indian students.

When dealing with international students returning to China for studies, students must examine the global epidemic scenario, changing circumstances, and their majors. As per Zhao, this policy applies to all international students equally.

In fact, preparations for the return of Indian students have already begun. All that is left is for the Indian side to produce a list of students who need to return to China urgently, he said.

Over 23,000 Indian students, largely studying medicine, are estimated to be stuck in India after returning home after the Covid-19 outbreak in China in December 2019. Due to the government's restrictions, they were unable to return to China.

Following China's declaration, India's embassy requested information on students planning to return. On a need-by-need basis, the Chinese side has stated its openness to explore enabling the return of Indian students to China.

After meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on March 25, 2022, Jaishankar stated that he had firmly taken up the plight of Indian students studying in China who have been denied permission to return due to Covid restrictions.

Indian Embassy hopes that China will take a non-discriminatory approach since it involves the future of so many young Indians. Minister Wang Yi assured him to speak to the relevant authorities on this matter, said Jaishankar.
