China has Begun to Permit the Resettlement of Indian Students

After understanding the prompt desire of Indian students to recommence their classes, China is arranging the return of Indian students soonest possible. Indian students who have been stranded in China for more than two years following the Covid-19 outbreak can see a ray of hope now.

Latest Update (May 26, 2022) - As per the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China is working with India to resolve particular issues and make arrangements for eligible Indian students to relocate to China as early as possible.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry had earlier stated that it hoped India would offer a list of Indian students who had a genuine need to return to China. Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was asked if there is a deadline for their admittance, given that the list was submitted a while ago.

Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China, said that the Chinese side recognises the immediate need for Indian students to return to China and resume their studies.

To ensure effective disease prevention and control, China would make adequate accommodations for Indian students to resume their studies smoothly. Since the onset of the coronavirus epidemic, China has made it easier for foreign nationals who have legitimate reasons to return to the country.

If they have such demands, Indian professionals working in China can petition appropriate Chinese authorities for family reunions, Wang added.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, said the government would continue to encourage China to make efforts to help Indian students.

Students who are required to return and squeeze opportunities, such as those in medical school, are able to do so and no longer suffer as a result of these constraints.

May 9, 2022 - Google forms containing information about Indian students, like enrollment year, graduation date and year, passport number, name of the university, contact number, email address, Covid-19 vaccination status, type of vaccine, etc., have been submitted to Chinese universities.

At the same time, 200 Pakistani students have been selected for visa issuance by the authorities. About 7,000 Pakistani students are waiting to return to China, making the news slightly disappointing for all the students waiting to return to their classes.

On the other hand, over 20,000 Indian students are still waiting to return to their universities in China since coming back in 2019 due to the pandemic. The Zero Covid Policy of China at the start of the pandemic had led to the suspension of foreign and international students' travel in the country.

As China gives international students from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. a way back into the country, Indian students have been getting worried about their fates. Many students have initiated social media campaigns and protests to bring attention to their woes.

The Embassy of India in China on April 29, 2022, stated that China is considering letting international students back in China on a need-assessed basis.

It is expected that China will start considering Indian students after assessing their information.

Many Indian students like Satvik Somya, Harbin Medical University, are hopeful that visa issuance shall start in the coming days after filling out the forms. Senior students are expected for early visa issuance as they are nearing their course ends.

More guidelines on the return are expected in the coming days. Students shall have to abide by all Covid-19 measures and bear-related costs when they are cleared to enter the country.

Students are sincerely hoping for a hassle-free return as soon as possible. The effects are seen as the result of a meeting between S. Jaishankar, Indian External Affairs Minister, and Wang Yi, Chinese Foreign Minister.

May 2, 2022 - Concerns expressed by Indian students regarding returning to China for education are taken seriously. At a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that they have communicated with the Indian side about the procedures and experience of other nations' students returning to China.

China is aware that there are a high number of Indian students in the country and  India may require some time to compile the list of names. Under the current, difficult, and serious pandemic scenario, China is prepared to accept some Indian students.

When dealing with international students returning to China for studies, students must examine the global epidemic scenario, changing circumstances, and their majors. As per Zhao, this policy applies to all international students equally.

In fact, preparations for the return of Indian students have already begun. All that is left is for the Indian side to produce a list of students who need to return to China urgently, he said.

Over 23,000 Indian students, largely studying medicine, are estimated to be stuck in India after returning home after the Covid-19 outbreak in China in December 2019. Due to the government's restrictions, they were unable to return to China.

Following China's declaration, India's embassy requested information on students planning to return. On a need-by-need basis, the Chinese side has stated its openness to explore enabling the return of Indian students to China.

The Indian Embassy plans to compile a list of such students that will be shared with the Chinese side for consideration. As a result, Indian students are asked to give relevant information by filling out the Google form (by the 8th of May at the latest), the organisation said in a statement.

After meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on March 25, 2022, Jaishankar stated that he had firmly taken up the plight of Indian students studying in China who have been denied permission to return due to Covid restrictions.

Indian Embassy hopes that China will take a non-discriminatory approach since it involves the future of so many young Indians. Minister Wang Yi assured him to speak to the relevant authorities on this matter, said Jaishankar.
