Certain bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees of Indian students will now be treated as equivalent to the UK degrees, thereby, benefitting those who wish to pursue higher studies or want to get employed in the UK.
India and the UK signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) according to which Indian Senior Secondary School or the Pre-University Certificates will be deemed suitable for entry into the UK’s higher education institutes. Professional degrees such as engineering, architecture, medicine and pharmacy are not included in this special arrangement.
The arrangement is a significant milestone as bachelor’s and master’s degree holders from India will be eligible for employment opportunities in the UK. The bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees of both countries will now be at par with each other.
Secretary of Commerce BVR Subrahmanyam informed that New Delhi will work out for the recognition of professional degrees related to medicine, engineering, architecture and pharmacy, during the free trade agreement. The talks will culminate by August 31, 2022, and the pact is supposed to be signed by Diwali.
Subrahmanyam said that Indian students can take degrees in the UK and will be eligible for a job in India. The arrangement covers 90% of the graduates. The bachelors of arts and science (BA, BSc) and masters of arts and science (MA, MSc) in India are equal to UK qualifications.
The MoU mutually recognises study duration and educational qualifications within duly approved and recognised universities and colleges in India and the UK. Subrahmanyam assured that the pact will increase the speed of negotiations. Though there is political turmoil, things are on track.
