Long-Term Stay Rate High Among International STEM PhD Graduates in US: Report

A recent report has highlighted a high retention rate among STEM PhD international graduates and that India continues to be a major country of origin for international graduates who stayed back in the US.

As reported by an issue report by Georgetown Universitys statistical research team, 77% of over 178,000 international STEM PhDgraduates from US universitieschose to stay back in the country as of February 2017.

Georgetown University's research AnalystJack Corrigan, research fellow Remco Zwetslootand data scientist James Dunham published an issue brief on statistical trends of STEM doctoral international students and their retention after graduation.

This statistical research was conducted in Georgetowns Center for Security and Emerging Technology. National Science Foundations Survey of Doctorate Recipients was used as a primary data source and included international students whoarrived in the US in the past 20 years and their origin country.

As per the findings, over 40% of about half a million Doctorate degrees awarded in the last 20 years have been presented to international students. No difference was found in the retention rate for different STEM majors.

According to the authors, the strength of the US education system is the greatest factor in attracting STEM talent to the country. The successful graduates, when they stay back strengthen the STEM workforce of the US. Those who have stayed back over the years have made valuable contributions to the US economy and society.

In January 2022, the Biden-Harris administration had included 22 more STEM majors to the existing list for the Optional PracticalTraining (OPT) Program. Also, the stay back period of international students in the UShad been increased up to three years after graduation.

Chinese and Indian students constituted about 50% of the total population of international students, and the majority were reported to bestaying back after graduation.

According to the 2020 issue report, in February 2017, 90% of Chinese and 87% of Indians, after completing PhDin 2000-2015, were living in the US. On the other hand, other countries' retention rate was around 66% only.

The authors disapproved of the fact that Indians face more difficulty in gaining Green Cardsin comparison to other foreign nationals. This is due to the number of green cards issued for each country being capped.
