Iranian Universities Expected to Attract About 75,000 International Students

According to the Sixth Five-Year National Development Plan (2016-2021), Iran is projected to attract around 75,000 international students. Universities in the country have the capacity of admitting up to 90,000 non-Iranian students.

According to the Sixth Five-Year National Development Plan (2016-2021), Iran is planning to attract around 75,000 international students. Universities in the country can offer admissions to up to 90,000 students from outside of Iran.

Head of the non-Iranian student affairs department at the Ministry of Science Farid Rahimi said that at present, 57,000 international students are studying in Iran which can be increased to 90,000 in the coming years. The current figure amounts to 1.64% of the total student population in Iran.

He added that the plan will, however, require better and appropriate infrastructure, publicity and the expansion of diplomacy.

An official at the Organisation of Student Affairs Afshin Akhoundzadeh, international students should account for 1.8% of the total student population according to the 20-year National Vision Document which is ending in 2025. The same is projected to even reach 2%. He added that 57,675 international students from 133 countries are studying in Iran, 30,600 of whom are enrolled at universities affiliated to the Ministry of Science. The rest are studying at Azad University and around 2,000 at medical universities.

According to the data, 57% of the international students in Iran are enrolled in a Master's degree, 27% in a bachelor's degree and 15% in a PhD. The remaining 1% is studying at other levels. Among international students, the fields of law, Persian literature and computer science make it to the top three while business management, civil engineering, English, Quran and Hadith sciences, political science, international relations, electrical engineering and other majors are also popular choices among non-Iranian students.

From 2013 to 2021, centres allowed to admit international students increased from 35 to 77. The Centre for Science and Technology Studies Leiden Ranking 2021 has ranked 36 Iranian universities among the top 1,000 universities in the world.

According to the Web of Science, Iran ranked second after China with a scientific growth rate of 10.4%.
