Wales Sees 19% Rise in Non-EU Student Enrolment - Report

International students have continued to find Wales as an attractive study abroad destination. As per a UCAS report, a rise of 19% in the total number of non-EU international student enrolments in 2021 was seen in Welsh Universities was revealed, while EU student numbers dropped.

With countries now beginning to lay emphasis on their international education sector and ensuring that their respective countries are among the top for those looking to study abroad, many new countries have become the centre of attraction for such students.

A UCAS data recently revealed that Wales continues to be one of the attractive destinations for international students, with a rise of 19% in the number of Non-EU students enrolling in Welsh universities and institutes.

In the latest admission cycle, i.e. 2021, a total of 1,875 undergraduate non-EU students have enrolled in different Welsh universities, the UCAS statistics revealed, which is 19% higher than 2020.Whereas, EU students accepting admission in one of the Welsh universities have dropped significantly to a mere 370, which is far less than 1,115 students that enrolled in 2020.

However, while a significant drop had been witnessed in EU student numbers, Global Wales, which is an international partnership between British Council Wales, Welsh Government, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, and the Universities Wales, pointed out that the rise in non-EU numbers was the largest amongthe other UK nations and is part of the broader positive trends.

In addition to the rise in non-EU student enrolment numbers, a significant rise in the total number of applicants in Welsh universities has also been observed. As per Global Wales, 11,625 applicants from England enrolled in Welsh universities, which is a 1.5% increase over the same time last year.

Global Wales Chair, Iwan Davies, pointed out that despite the effects and challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the rise in international student numbers across Wales has been an encouraging sight.

Elizabeth Treasure, Universities Wales Chair commented that the UCAS statistics are proof of the strong demand for higher education in Wales.She added that the young students till value the wide range of benefits that come along with the Welsh university experience, from employment opportunities to wider cultural and social opportunities.

As per media reports, the Global Wales partnership also aims to diversify the international student body in the country, as part of its goal of achieving 30,000 international student numbers in Wales by 2030.

As per HESA 2019-20 statistics, a total of 21,990 international students had travelled to the country, out of whom, 5,805 were EU citizens. Media reports stated that among the priority regions for 2021, the US, India and Vietnam are the priority countries, meanwhile, the EU became the fourth priority region.
