SHG Helper’s Daughter Selected for US YES Scholarship Program, Set to Fly Soon

16-year-old Kashish, a class 10 student enrolled in Prerna Girls School of Uttar Pradesh, India was elated when she heard about her selection for the US Departments Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program. Under this scholarship scheme, high school students from strategically important countries are invited to an academic year in the US.

Kashish tutored numerous students during the Covid-19 pandemic to support her mother and considers this a great learning opportunity. She is set to board her flight to Missouri, USA on August 7, 2022, where she will continue her 11th standard at Parkway South High School for a year.

The YES program started in 2002 and is designed for high school students from countries where a significant Muslim population lives. YES students like Kashish serve as youth ambassadors of their home country and promote mutual understanding and long-lasting relationships with host families and communities.

The few other countries from where students are eligible for the YES program areAlbania, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and others.

Eligibility Criteria for YES Program

Candidates applying for the YES program must meet the eligibility criteria for Indian students given below:

  • They must be between 15-17.7 years old,

  • Have Indian citizenship,

  • Be enrolled in classes between 8 to 11 during the program,

  • Have a B grade or at least 70% marks,

  • English proficiency level should be intermediate or above,

  • The annual income of parents or legal guardians should be below 5 lac annually,

  • Must not have spent more than 90 days in the US in past five years,

  • Meet J-1 visa requirements.

Selection Process for YES Program

The selection process is merit-based and rigorous. Applicants have to undergo several rounds.

They need to take an English language proficiency exam, complete a YES program application essay, write a proctored essay and participate in individual or group interviews.

What are the Costs Covered Under YES Program?

The expenses for the high school students covered under the YES program are:

  • Airfare to and from India and the USA

  • Cost of pre-departure orientation

  • Living with a host family for 10 to 11 months

  • A good monthly stipend

  • Cost of programs, materials and activities

  • Health insurance

The YES Program provides a variety of support programs for students who wish to go to the USA.
