Being one of the top destinations for study abroad aspirants, Canada now includes another college in the Designated Learning Institutions. Southeast College has now earned the tag of an international student learning centre among other Candian Universities Accepting international students.
The enrolment of the college will now allow the Estevan and Weyburn campuses to bring in the first batch of international students in the Fall Intake Session 2021. However, this will depend on the border restrictions in Canada due to the pandemic.
The entire process of being an approved DLI, Southeast College has been working with dedication for nearly 2 years, stated Jody Holzmiller, the Vice-President for Training and Education with Southeast College. He added that the university “got busy and submitted an application to the Ministry of Advanced Education for DLI designation.
In a bid to be an approved DLI, the University was required to provide proof of being prepared and equipped to house international students. Additionally, the College was also required to present plans and explain their processes of being prepared for the students.
In the steps, Southeast College developed a handbook that had been specifically tailored towards international students. They outlined the appropriate resources at their disposal such as a student advisor and other factors. Further, the college also included the designated programmes that the international students could enrol, for the upcoming years.
The Ministry of Advanced Education was then tasked with the job of visiting the college and analysing the various components, along with an interview after the submission of the application form. Southeast College was approved as a Designated Learning Institution after the process was completed.
In her statement, Holzmiller highlighted that they expect small numbers in terms of international student enrolments, but they are excited nonetheless to welcome those who choose to. The intention behind the new change was the process of internationalisation of the programmes over the next few years.
Southeast College aims to provide students with the opportunity to not only learn the academic programmes offered by the college but also to interact with the domestic students and possible even more.
The new designation of Southeast College will also facilitate new opportunities for the college as well as the labour market. She stated that the college offers a number of programme for which there is a labour demand, however, not a learner demand.
Therefore, if an international student demand for these courses, the college may be able to meet the necessary numbers to fill the seats and possibly run the programme.
As per the current plans of Southeast College, students from East India and the Philippines are expected to fill in the different programmes. The College expects to receive a few international students in the academic year 2021. However, they expect to see more international students to enrol in the different programme in the Fall Intake 2022.
Currently, based on the analysis of the labour market demand, Business Certificate and Continuing Care Assistance are the two programme available for international students, aspiring to enrol at Estevan and Weyburn Campuses.
With this new designation, it is expected that the population as wel as the economic conditions of the area will also improve in due course. Adding to her statements, Holzmiller also pointed out that the college will assist the students in the processes of applying for student visas in the country, however, they will not be responsible for the paperwork required by Immigration Canada.
