Over the last five years, a total of 1935 students have been selected under the Chief Ministers Overseas Scholarship Scheme for minorities, for which the Government of Telangana has spent Rs. 144.10 cr.
Introduced by the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, the scheme is aimed at financially assisting poor students who wish to pursue postgraduate or doctoral studies abroad.
In 2019-20, the government provided the overseasscholarship to 498 students, 502 in 2018-19, 351 in 2017-18, 140 in 2016-17 and 444 in 2015-16. For the same, the government spent Rs 23.67 cr in 2019-20, Rs 50.01 cr in 2018-19, Rs 35.09 cr in 2017-18, Rs 13.25 cr in 2016-17 and Rs 22.09 cr in 2015-16.
The scheme allows minority students to pursue their higher education in one of the 10 specified foreign countries including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore among others.

The family income limit in order to avail the scholarship has currently been increased to Rs 5 lakh per annum. Earlier, it was Rs 3 lakh per annum.
The scholarship grants Rs 20 lakh to selected students, in addition to which a one-way ticket to 50 (25 each for Fall and Spring intakes) students will also be sponsored.

The academic eligibility for the scheme requires applicants to be a graduate or postgraduate in areas including Pure Sciences, Medicine and Nursing, Engineering, Social Science, Humanities, and Agricultural Sciences with at least 60% marks.
