UK Launches World’s First International Student Charter to Enhance Study Abroad Experience

The world’s first International Student Charter has been designed by international students and aims to fulfill all expectations of students regarding studying in the UK, from pre-arrival to graduation.

UKCISA has launched the worlds first International Student Charter which aims at making international students' experience in the UK world-class. The authority announced the Charter on the occasion of its three-day annual conference held in Newcastle. The event was attended by the representatives of over 85 higher education institutions in the UK.

Professor Koen Lamberts, Chair of UKCISA Board, revealed that the Charter will help in outlining the principles for UK universities to prioritise and work upon through individualistic strategies.

The Charter plans to meet the expectation of students starting from pre-arrival to graduation. It aims at equality across social, academic, and employability sectors, and includes employer management and mental health support. Well-being issues related to culture shock and barriers to employment have been identified.

Other targeted aspects are visa and immigration rules, cultural differences in academic standards, pedagogy, and assessments. Additional concessions have been requested for students studying online from different time zones.

A team of student ambassadors was responsible to write the Charter. They expressed and shared views on what an international student experience must be like, and on this basis, they have worked out five key principles for higher education institutions to work upon, inclusivity, collaboration, sustainability, enhanced support and targeted support.

UKCISA also staged a dialogue between students and industry stakeholders to ensure that no perspective, expectation, or need get ignored by the Charter.

The Charter is only available in a paper-free digital download format and includes environmental sustainability and climate change among the basic aims.

Katie Crabtree, a former PhD American student at the University of Leeds, stated that international students coming to the UK deserve true intercultural communication and experience sharing along with consumption of education.

Lord Karan Bilimoria, CBE DL & UKCISA President, expressed his pride in the fact that the Charter has been led by students and various representatives of the education sector have actively welcomed it. International student ambassadors, involved in the writing of the Charter, were proud and excited to finally present their hard work to the stakeholders and shareholders of the UKs higher education sector. They are open and passionate about receiving feedback and views of the community to further work on the betterment of the Charter.

UKCISA further announced plans to sanction grants for members and students to support the cause of the Charter.

The three-day annual conference also has sessions planned on visa compliance and risk, student refugees, immigration issues, reimagining careers support, global citizenship, and international law.
