Students studying BS in Biology and MD from the Philippines have opposed the Indian regulatory body's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulation 2021. This regulation states that such MBBS students are required to take the course for 54 months.

However, the Philippines failed to fulfil the instructions as it offers medical courses in two parts - 18 to 24 months for the BS biology course and 48 months for the MD course.

Commenting on the same, a student pursuing MD final year at the University of Philippines, said that the duration of their course might be 18-24 months but the classes are for longer hours. Kaustav Bhattamishra added that sometimes their classes start at 7 am and lasts till 8-9 pm, unlike 9-5 lectures in India.

Another MBBS-MD student from the Philippines said that several students are asking NMC to reconsider its decision on the regulation. They have also approached political and legal help to highlight the issue.

On the other hand, students who have returned from the war-torn country are irked by NMC's delay in providing them with suitable options for applying to Indian medical universities or colleges.

Recently, the Bengal government came forth with a decision to allot medical seats to Ukraine-returned students, but the act was heavily criticised by the NMC as the guidelines seek such medical students to complete their courses including internships at the same college they were admitted in.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India has asked NMC to draft a policy for MBBS students to permit them to complete their clinical training in India.
