University Canada West (UCW) in Vancouver is providing each of its student with self-isolating facilities in a hotel with a $650 voucher along with additional support. This entire commitment is worth $455,000 and it is meant for helping the incoming students to the university. The aim is to provide assistance to students who have to self-isolate away from home for two weeks by offsetting the cost of self-isolating.
Brock Dykeman, the president of UCW, said that this initiative is being taken to help in easing the extra financial burden that the students are facing now. He further acknowledged that these times are uncertain and challenging for the students and providing such aid will be a huge relief for those who go to Canada to pursue their education.
Currently, all the students who arrive in British Columbia are required to submit a self-isolation plan. It is a legal commitment for self-isolating that is enforceable under the Public Health Act. it is essential for the plan to include where the student will be staying, how they will get there (public transit is not allowed), how they will get groceries, and how they will access medical care and essential services.
Dykeman further said that UCW intends to let its students know that the university and its faculty members are willing to provide support to them whenever required. He told that apart from the financial support, regular check-ins will be conducted by the Student Affairs team of UCW to ask students about their mental and physical wellbeing. The university will also provide them with online wellness, social, and entertainment activities.
University Canada West has compiled a list of isolation resources for its incoming students. The list is inclusive of special accommodation rates for the students at several hotels in Vancouver offering isolation packages. These vouchers are valid for the new students who will be beginning with their UCW programme in the term of October 2020 and are applicable to both categories of students who are either starting the course face-to-face in Canada or in the online mode and will be arriving within three months after travel restrictions are lifted.
Recently, the university has also announced a return to on-campus learning for the fall term. From the month of October, UCW will be implementing a blended learning programme delivery in which many students can have both limited on-campus learning as well as online classes. The students will be required to complete online preparation work for their course before they attend on-campus learning sessions with the professors of the university.
Comprehensive safety measures are being introduced by UCW as the varsity prepares to welcome back its students. The students who are unable to take classes on campus for the fall term will be able to attend their classes online and start their on-campus studies at a later date.
