Offering more support to Indian students who aspire to study in New Zealand but are unable to travel due to travel restrictions can now do so through a unique package developed by one of the top universities in New Zealand.

Offering support to prospective undergraduate and graduate students from India planning to pursue higher studies in New Zealand, the University of Auckland has announced a new innovative support package, just before the phased reopening of NZs borders in 2022.

The announcement of the package, as per the press release indicates the AUs commitment to welcome and value them as members of the community for over a decade, further stating that Indian students contribute significantly to the research activity of the University of Auckland.

In his statements, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dawn Freshwater commented that the Delta and Omicron variants of COVID-19 severely impacted Indian students and their ability to study abroad. In other words, students were forced towards online study, unable to travel to their study destination.

Brett Berquist, International Director, stated that the students could receive support and help, during the phased border reopening.

One of the areas that the university aims to help the students is their finances. As per the press release, the University of Auckland acknowledged the difficulties and complications in securing loans, especially when studying part-time and online. To combat this, AU is offering the option for deferred fee payments to graduate students from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields.

This move allows graduate students to commence their studies online from India itself while delaying the payment of their tuition fees at the University of Auckland until it is time for them to activate their education loan before they travel to New Zealand.

Mr Berquist calls the innovative approach, a win-win situation since students will still be able to pursue their higher studies at the university.

Additionally, the university has researched intensively with Indian students and their families, to offer an undergraduate student support package. Through micro-internships with different NZ companies, additional online support and a loyalty programme offering a one-course fee waiver on completion of two full-time study semesters.

The package, Professor Freshwater commented, will help students build their employability skills while they complete their studies. Moreover, when they arrive in New Zealand, the students can access the world-leading work rights provisions while they study as well as for three years on completion of their studies.
