Expectations Rise as US Eases Travel Advisory for India

The US and CDC have recognised and acknowledged the improvement in India's COVID-19 situation and have made the move to put the country at a Level 2 risk. In an advisory released by the US State Department, US Citizens are advised to exercise increased caution while travelling to the country, however, restrictions for travellers from India remain in place.

Expectations Rise as US Eases Travel Advisory for India

As India witnesses improvement in its COVID-19 situation, countries across the globe are easing their travel rules. As per the latest notification, the US has moved India from a Level 3 risk to a Level 2 risk. The country hasUS relieved its travel restrictions to the country for its citizens. The CDC, Centre for Disease Control and Prevention moved India to Level 2, i.e. Moderate, from Level 3, High. However, the change in risk status was directed towards US citizens travelling to India.

TOI reported that a month ago, the US had moved India to the highest risk level, i.e. Level 4, which banned travel. Subsequently, the US moved the country to Level 3 (reconsider travel), which now has been converted to Level 2 (exercise increased), as the COVID-19 situation becomes better.

As per the US State Department revealed in its Travel Advisory for India, as updated on 16th August 2021, that the CDCs move on India indicated a moderated level of COVID-19 in India. However, it is advised that all travellers to India be completely vaccinated with an FDA approved vaccine.

As per the notification released on 4th May 2021, the US mandated restrictions on all travellers from India, beginning 4th May, restricted and suspended entry of Non-American Citizens/Residents, barring few exceptions, who had been in India during the 14-day period before their travel or attempted travel to the US.

TOI commented that while the US has recognised and acknowledged the COVID-19 situation in India, the relaxation of restrictions for travellers from India is yet to be seen. However, the USs move in acknowledging the situation can bring hope among Indian students who are waiting to travel to the US and commence their studies at some of the top universities in the US.

Meanwhile, few countries have begun to ease the travel restrictions for travellers from India, including Switzerland, UK, France, Germany and Maldives. However, countries such as the US, Singapore and Canada, a few top destinations for Indians, are yet to ease their travel restrictions.
