Established in 1823, Birkbeck, University of London is a public institution considered as one of the top research-intensive universities in the world. What was founded as the London Mechanics’ Institute around 200 years ago is not part of the University of London. Birbeck awards qualifications that are respected and recognised internationally. Covid-19 Response

Birkbeck hosts students from more than 100 countries every year, with over 1,500 students having enrolled for the 2020-21 academic year alone. With international students playing a major role in contributing to a culturally diverse community, the university has taken the following measures:

  • Teaching in the Spring term (between January and March) will be delivered in online mode for both domestic and international students, including those who are on student visa.

  • In-person teaching will be resumed in the Summer term (between April and July).

  • Students who would be applying for a student visa would be expected to engage in in-person classes. In case, they do not want to return to campus, they would be granted a continuing visa sponsorship. 

  • A total of 140 study places have been made available for students.

  • Its virtual classrooms include a rich range of videos, study material and learning activities, delivered according to the convenience of the students.

  • The university is also offering financial assistance to students enrolled in programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and MPhil/PhD levels.

  • Students who are not satisfied with their online learning experience can raise their concerns with the concerned department.

  • All student services such as Careers, Wellbeing and Study Skills and Student Advice are being offered virtually to all.
