With a high research output, the University of Central Lancashire is a public university that received its university status in 1992. The university, commonly known as UCLan, was founded in 1828 as an Institute for the Diffusion of Knowledge. UCLan is one of the largest universities in the UK. Situated in the city of Preston, Lancashire, England, UCLan is the 19th largest university in the UK on the account of student numbers. It is at the 70th position in The Complete University Guide rankings 2021 and has also been ranked 76th among top UK universities according to the 2020 rankings released by the Guardian.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

UCLan offers over 400 undergraduate and more than 200 postgraduate programmes across 20 different academic schools. The urban setting of the university makes it feasible for students to access all the facilities that a city has to offer. The main campus of UCLan is located at a walkable distance from Preston City Centre. Other campuses of the University of Central Lancashire are situated in Cumbria and Lancashire. The university also has an overseas campus in Cyprus that opened in 2012. This made UCLan the first British university in the country to open an overseas campus.  

Accomplishments & Alumni

Apart from UCLan’s focus on its students’ practical skills, it is also known highly for its research orientation. 16 subject areas offered at the University of Central Lancashire were termed as ‘World Leading’ by the Research Excellence Framework in 2014. Some of the notable alumni of UCLan include Waqar Azmi, Victoria Derbyshire, Jim Bamber, Simon Kelner, and Mary Fitzpatrick. From health to history and journalism to engineering, UCLan grads have successfully made their mark in all areas of work and contributed significantly to not just the UK but other parts of the world as well.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

One of the high priorities of UCLan is to maximise employability for its graduates by furnishing them with apt skills and providing them with course content that meets the latest business needs. For this, the university also has strong links with employers like Rolls Royce, British Aerospace and Cisco Systems. The university also offers business incubation training and facilities to its graduates. UCLan has encouraged and helped over 1,000 of its graduates for their start-ups in the last five years alone, making it the second-highest figure in the same category in the UK. 

Covid-19 Response

UCLan is continuously monitoring the Covid-19 situation to keep its community safe. While things are bound to change due to the current situation, the university is determined to provide the best student experience in the coming months whether it is in or out of the classroom. 

  • Courses are being planned to start as normal although the delivery may be a little different. However, it will most likely be a blend of online and face-to-face learning, further information related to which will be posted on the official website.

  • Applications for some January start courses have been closed to international students due to overwhelming demand. These courses include MSc Computing, MSc IT Security, MBA, MSc Applied Public Health, BA (Hons) Business and Management and BSc (Hons) Nursing Top up.

  • The UCAS application deadline has been extended to January 29, 2021, 6 pm and the university will be accepting applications for September intake even after this date. 

  • Bookings for university accommodation are open although there may be only limited spaces for certain types of room.

  • In case your course is normally delivered in-person, then it may not be possible for students to do it 100% online. However, students can take up online or e-learning courses if they wish to do it completely online.

  • Interviews of new applicants will be conducted online through Microsoft Teams or telephone

  • Due to visa requirements, part-time study options are not available for international students.

  • The university has also expanded its list of recognised English language proficiency tests.

Scholarships for International Students at University of Central Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire offers bursaries and scholarships to its international students. Candidates can check the eligibility criteria for the following scholarships and bursaries and apply accordingly.

Excellence Scholarship

Award Amount: £3,000 per year of study

Eligibility:

  • Must fulfil the country-specific criteria for the chosen programme

  • Must choose to progress to an undergraduate or postgraduate taught programme in the academic year 2021-22

  • Must not be eligible for any other scholarship.

  • Candidates pursuing distance learning/blended learning/postgraduate research/pre-sessional English language/MBBS from the university are not considered eligible for this.

Application Process:

  • Candidates will have to first apply to a programme at the university.

  • After the assessment of their applications, if they get accepted at the university, the admission team will add the scholarship to their offer letters. 

  • Candidates do not have to apply for this award separately.

Family Loyalty Scholarship

Award Amount: £1,000 per year of study

Eligibility:

  • Must be a sibling, spouse or child or someone who has graduated from or is currently studying a full-time course at the university.

  • Candidates pursuing distance learning/blended learning/postgraduate research/pre-sessional English language/MBBS from the university are not considered eligible for this.

GEMS Education Scholarship

Award Amount: Tuition fee discount

Eligibility:

  • Must be enrolled in a high school programme at a GEMS school

  • Must also meet the eligibility criteria for the programme of study at UCLan

  • Candidates pursuing distance learning/blended learning/postgraduate research/pre-sessional English language/MBBS from the university are not considered eligible for this.

Application Process:

Northern Consortium (NCUK) Scholarship

Award Amount: £2,000 per year of study

Eligibility:

  • Must be enrolled in an NCUK programme listed on the NCUK website.

  • Must also meet the eligibility criteria for the programme of study at UCLan.

  • Candidates pursuing distance learning/blended learning/postgraduate research/pre-sessional English language/MBBS from the university are not considered eligible for this.

Application Process:

International Bursaries

Award Amount: £1,000 per year

Eligibility:

  • The award is available to international students except for Chinese students. 

  • Candidates pursuing distance learning/blended learning/postgraduate research/pre-sessional English language/MBBS from the university are not considered eligible for this. 

Application Process:

  • Candidates will have to first apply to a programme at the university.

  • After the assessment of their applications, if they get accepted at the university, the admission team will add the bursary to their offer letters. 

  • Candidates do not have to apply for this award separately.

Merit Scholarships for International Students

Award Amount: £2,000 per year of study

Eligibility:

  • Students must meet the academic entry criteria for the programmes offered at UCLan.

  • Candidates must be applying to an undergraduate or postgraduate taught programme at the university. 

  • The scholarship is open to international students only.

  • Candidates pursuing distance learning/blended learning/postgraduate research/pre-sessional English language/MBBS from the university are not considered eligible for this.

Application Process:

  • There is no separate application for this scholarship.

  • Once, candidates are accepted to the university, the admission team will include the scholarship details on their offer letters if they meet the entry requirements. 

Chevening- UK Government Scholarships

Award Amount: Tuition fee discount

Eligibility:

  • Students must hold an undergraduate degree and apply for a postgraduate degree at UCLan.

  • Must return to their home country after completing the programme. 

  • Candidates pursuing distance learning/blended learning/postgraduate taught/pre-sessional/MBBS from the university are not considered eligible for this.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship

Award Amount: To be Confirmed

Eligibility:

  • Must be applying for MSc at the university.

  • Must be from a low and middle-income Commonwealth country willing to spend 12 months at a university in the UK as part of their doctoral studies in their home country.

  • Must return to their home country after completing the programme.
