History, Affiliations & Rankings

The University of Chester is a public university in Chester, England and established in 1839. It started as a teacher training college which later became the University of Chester. It was founded by Prime Minister William Gladstone and the Earl of Derby, and also a famous former Archbishop of Canterbury. The university contributes as a member of the Cathedrals Group, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the North West Universities Association and Universities UK. The 2010 audit of Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) appreciated the institution for its recommendable practice in ensuring standards and also enhancing the quality of learning opportunities and supportive relationships. It is ranked #79 according to the UK Universities Ranking 2020.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The University of Chester has six campuses with a University Centre in Shrewsbury. Parkgate Road Campus is spread over an area of 32 acres. It has a mixture of both Victorian buildings and modern buildings. Other than offering a range of facilities important for learning, it has a swimming pool, sports hall, bookshop, fitness centre, science and language laboratories and a bank also. Other campuses are also well-equipped with an environment that is important for learning. It offers a range of foundation, bachelor’s and master’s courses. MPhil and PhD programs are also there. The university also offers courses in health and social care, humanities, business and management, arts and media, medicine, science and engineering, dentistry and clinical sciences, social sciences, education and children's services.

Accomplishments & Alumni

The University of Chester Business Research Institute (BRI) was established in 2014 as a faculty level research institute.  It was supported by the University’s strategic development funds and with encouragement from the Business Advisory Council and business partners. The BRI focuses its activities upon building and developing the University’s business research and advanced consultancy capability and capacity alongside the University’s Riverside Innovation Centre, Chester Business School and Thornton Engineering and Technology Centre. The University of Chester notable alumni include International rugby union player John Carleton, children's author Roderick Hunt MBE, screenwriter Alan Bleasdale, politician Helen Jones and International footballer Jo Fletcher.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

The university has 1,880 staff and over 19,850 students who come from different countries across the world. Every year, students of the University of Chester secure jobs in different sectors at companies and organisations across the UK. The University of Chester conducts a university-based induction programme that is specifically designed to assist students with placement and assess them based on their skills and capabilities. Students are encouraged to join placement sessions to increase their awareness of the skills and abilities required to meet the needs of employers. Notable companies coming for recruitment and internships are BlackRock,  BM Technovations, American Express, Westcliff University, Hughes & Hughes, CheM and many more.

COVID-19 Response

Following the UK Government announcement about the easing of lockdown restrictions that allow on-campus teaching from May 17th, 2021, the University of Chester has taken  certain decisions mentioned below: 

  • The University of Chester is planning to welcome both domestic and international students on campus in the upcoming days. However, flexibility shall be given to students who choose to stay at home due to travel restriction or safety reasons.

  • Students and staff of the University of Chester are supposed to adhere to the guidelines defined by the UK Government and the university as safety measures. The university shall continue to take disciplinary action against those who will refuse to follow the guidelines.

  • Students returning to campus are encouraged to take the COVID test at home and come on to University only if the test is a negative result. In case someone experiences COVID-19 symptoms, He/ She should remain on campus to keep everyone safe.

  • The members of the University of Chester are also encouraged to get fully vaccinated before returning to the university campus.

International Alumni Scholarship

Candidates who complete their undergraduate studies from the university and wish to continue their studies from the university will be eligible for the International Merit Alumni Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded based on the student’s commitment to the institution. The terms and conditions of students must be fulfilled to be considered for the International Alumni Scholarship. 

Chevening Scholarships

Offered by the UK Government, students from the Commonwealth countries can avail the scholarship scheme if they have displayed talent or have been recognised as potential leaders or managers in different fields such as the media, business, politics, religion, academia or civil society.

Goa Education Trust Scholarship

Initially intended for Goans, Goa Education Trust Scholarship is now available to all students from India who wish to pursue a Master’s course at  Chester University UK or any other UK universities.

Other Scholarships

Apart from the above, Chester University UK offers a generous number of international and merit-based scholarships to students applying for undergraduate or postgraduate courses.
