History, Affiliations & Rankings

University of East London (UEL) was founded in 1892, initially named as the West Ham Technical Institute. Later in 1982, it was renamed to North East London Polytechnic, merging 3 different campuses (West Ham, Walthamstow, Dagenham). It was renamed the Polytechnic of East London in 1989 after the North East London Polytechnic became a higher education institution in 1988. Finally, in 1992, the Polytechnic of East London became the University of East London, one of the first “New Universities” or commonly known term, Modern Universities. UEL is officially accredited by the Privy Council, Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), and European University Association (EUA). UEL has been ranked #750 in World University Ranking by QS 2020, Ranked #116 in University Ranking (UK) by The Complete University Guide 2020, and Ranked #801 in University Ranking by Times Higher Education (THE) 2020. 

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

UEL has 3 campuses located in London, including Stratford Campus, Docklands Campus, and University Square. The well-known Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is located at the Stratford campus which has a tennis court, hockey fields, and a swimming pool. University of East London (UEL) comprises 3 colleges - College of Arts, Technology and Innovation, College of Applied Health and Communities, and College of Professional Services. The college provided courses in science, engineering and art, and has also established its own internal degree courses in science and engineering, which were ratified by the University of London. The university is immensely proud of its Psychology, Education and Communities, and Business and Law schools. The most sought after courses are Computer Science, Sociology, Communication & Media Studies, Psychology, Business Management, Law And Biological Sciences. 

Accomplishments & Alumni

UEL has a track report of research provided towards the local East London community, and have expertise in the sectors of Health Promotion and Wellbeing, Biomedical Science, Public Health, Pharmacology, Podiatry and Physiotherapy. The research associations benefit from the expertise of skilled researchers accomplishing within interprofessional groups. Notable Alumni include Kemi Adeosun – Minister of Finance of Nigeria, Tazeen Ahmad - British journalist and broadcaster, Hilary Armstrong – British Labour Party politician and formerly Member of Parliament, Gemma Gibbons – Judo Olympian, Rupa Huq - British Labour Party politician and Member of Parliament, and Edison James – former Prime Minister of Dominica.
