History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established in 1963, the University of Essex started its academic journey in 1964 with 122 students and 28 academic staff in three schools including Comparative Studies, Physical Sciences and Social Studies. The university has been named ‘University of the Year’ in 2018 by Times Higher Education and was ranked 25th for research quality in the Times Good University Guide, 2020. It also featured among the top 15 mainstream English universities for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2019. The university has partnerships with various institutions such as University Centre Colchester, South Essex College of Further and Higher Education, University of Essex International College (UEIC), University of Suffolk and more.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
The campus of the University of Essex is spread over an area of 200 acres of parkland, located in the historic Wivenhoe Park. It was ranked 5th in the Times Good University Guide 2019 for its spend on facilities and services on each student. Essex has a total of three university campuses, Colchester, Southend-on-Sea and Loughton. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, short course courses and CPD in various fields like Acting Biological Sciences, Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, Economics, Business, Hospitality and so on.
Accomplishments & Alumni
The University of Essex has been awarded the highest rating of Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework in 2017, placing it amongst other highly-ranked universities in the UK. It prides itself on its history of graduates from across the world. From sports to arts and sciences, Essex alumni have succeeded in achieving recognition for their work. The university has, till date, awarded over 300 honorary degrees to men and women who have made contributions to human welfare, learning, acquisition of knowledge, human rights, and more. In 1967, it awarded the first honorary degree to Harold Wilson, Prime Minister at the time; Lord Annan, Provost of University College London and John Northcote Nash, the famous artist.
Student Diversity & Visiting Companies
The University of Essex has students from more than 140 countries. Students come from over 30 different cultural societies and celebrate and promote an inclusive and diverse community on the Essex campus. The university employs around 2,000 people with a focus on employability workshops, special emphasis on the area of study, learning a new language, internships, etc. Some of the recent graduate employers at the university are Amnesty International, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bloomberg, Barclays, United Nations, Morgan Stanley.
Providing assurance to the students, the University of Essex has put the needs, safety and health of the students first, ensuring that no life is endangered during these unprecedented times. Ranging from a provision for fully-virtual classes to access to unrestricted students, the University of Essex has designed a tension-free environment for the students, during the current situation.
Blended form of learning that includes face-to-face classes and online classes as well. The university offers a provision of pursuing the course online but only for those who are currently unable to travel due to international travel restrictions.
Face-coverings/masks will be compulsory on campus, while the university takes the necessary steps for sanitisation and adding new markings to indicate the places where students and staff can travel.
Student accommodation and COVID-19 isolation advice will be offered to all students travelling from outside the UK to help them feel comfortable and safe after reaching the University of Essex.
Value: £4,000 for first-year tuition fee only
Applicable: For students from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh for their first year of study.
Only students who have been classified as international students for fee purposes.
International students who are funding the course all by themselves. In other words, students with sponsorship will not be eligible for this scholarship.
Candidates who are resident of any one of the countries mentioned above
Candidates must be beginning their first year of study at the University of Essex.
Value: £2,000 for first-year only
Applicable: Candidates who achieve academic excellence in their International Baccalaureate.
Candidates must have received an admission offer letter from the University of Essex for 2020-21 or 2021-22
Candidates must ensure that they have applied for a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Essex.
Students in the first year of their study are eligible.
Candidates must have secured 34 points or above in the International Baccalaureate.
