The University of Glasgow is a public research university located in Glasgow, Scotland. Established by papal bull in the year 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and is also one of the four ancient universities of Scotland. It was a part of the Scottish Enlightenment during the 18th century along with the universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and St Andrews. The University of Glasgow has been globally ranked 60th in the 2019 CWTS Leiden and 67th in the 2020 QS World University Ranking respectively. It has also been recognised as one of the top 10 universities in the United Kingdom (UK). The University of Glasgow is a member of the Russell Group which is an association of all the leading British institutions in research and teaching. As per the Research Excellence Framework (REF) of 2014, 81% of the research achievements of the University of Glasgow were rated as "internationally excellent" and the varsity was given the 10th position on research volume in the UK.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The University of Glasgow is spread over a few campuses of which the main campus is the Gilmorehill campus in Hillhead. The campus of the university encompasses everything from housing societies for students and sports facilities to health care and learning centres. Collectively, the total area of the University of Glasgow is around 430 acres. Glasgow originally educated students who belonged to wealthy family backgrounds, which was the same for all the universities in the pre-modern era. However, in the 19th century, the University of Glasgow became a pioneer in British higher education by also providing for the needs of students from the growing urban and commercial middle class. It offers courses in many streams including law, science, medical, teaching, civil service, and the church.

The University of Glasgow has a long list of well-known alumni who have become popular faces over the years. These include philosopher Francis Hutcheson, James Wilson, who was a founding father of the United States, engineer James Watt, physicist Lord Kelvin, philosopher and economist Adam Smith, surgeon Joseph Lister, three British Prime Ministers, and seven Nobel laureates. The students of Glasgow have received global recognition in their respective fields. The university also has many awards and accomplishments under its belt and has been ranked in the top positions by the leading ranking agencies worldwide every year.

Glasgow International College Achievement Award

Value: £3,000

Entry: For students who have displayed the best performance in their foundation or pre-masters courses.


  • All candidates must be classified as international for fee purposes.

  • They must hold a valid admission offer for undergraduate or postgraduate taught courses.

  • All applicants must ensure that they have secured excellent scores and attendance in their foundation or Pre-masters courses.

All eligible candidates will automatically be selected for the course depending on their academic performance. Eligible candidates will be contacted for the same in due time as well.

Undergraduate Excellence Scholarships

Value: £5,000 per year of study

Entry: International students who have displayed excellent academic performance.


  • Candidates who are classed as international students for fee purposes are eligible.

  • They need to hold a valid offer for admission to any one of the undergraduate programmes for the 2020 academic year.

  • Candidates who have displayed an academic achievement before beginning their study at the university and have achieved an A level (or local equivalent) for the course or are predicted to display the same are guaranteed a scholarship.
