History, Affiliation, and Rankings

California State University Long Beach was established in 1949 as Los Angeles-Orange County State College but is popularly known as 'The Beach. It is the third-largest college with an urban setting from 23 campuses that come under CSU. University is affiliated to the American Association of State College, Association of Southeast Asian Institute, Big West Conference & Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. CSU Long Beach's ranking by US News and World Report 2020 edition of Best Colleges is Regional Universities West, #20.

Infrastructure, Campus, and Courses

The University is the third-largest among CSU 23 campuses with a sprawling 322-acre campus. There are eight different colleges offering subjects like arts, business, engineering, liberal arts, education, professional and international education, natural sciences and mathematics, health and human services. The College of Arts offers Design, Music, Theatre Arts, and Dance programs among others. The College of Business is extremely well known for business programs and hence offers seven programs including Finance, Accountancy, Marketing, and International Business. College of Engineering has Chemical, Biomedical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering programs along with others. Students can also pursue language programs, Psychology, Ocean Studies, and many more.

Accomplishments & Alumni

The schools sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I Big West Conference and are especially competitive in womens volleyball. In the year 2018 alone this university had more than 320,000 alumni who have made major contributions to the fields of arts, science, and sports. Some of the previous alumni are Linda Woolverton from 'The Lion King' and 'Beauty and the Beast'. Mark Steven Johnson, has co-written and directed 'Ghost Rider' and 'Daredevil'. Misty May-Treanor has won multiple gold medals at the Olympics for beach volleyball. Paul Geery, Vice President of Boeing's Defense Space & Security unit, is also an alumnus of this college and last but not least Steven Spielberg the famous movie maker.

Student Diversity and Visiting companies

The enrolled student population at California State University-Long Beach is 40.5% Hispanic or Latino, 21% Asian, 18.7% White, 4.72% Two or More Races, 3.93% Black or African American, 0.245% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders, and 0.146% American Indian or Alaska Native. With 54.5% female, the university is considered by international students as well. International students make up about 7% of the student population of the university. Out of 2500 international students, roughly 2000 are undergraduates. The majority of the students belong to India, China, and Japan.

The Career Development Center conducts workshops, information sessions, job fairs, and events to help students explore and prepare for their career opportunities as well as connect with employers to gain insight on the current job market and the skills needed to succeed. Companies hiring freshers include Deloitte, PWC, KPMG, Ernst and Young, Google, Facebook, and so on.

CSU Long Beach Scholarships for International Students

CSU Long Beach offers umpteen scholarships to students irrespective of their immigration status. It divides the scholarship opportunities into campus scholarships and external scholarships.

BeachScholarships

All students applying to the university are eligible for BeachScholarships.

Deadlines:

  • Fall Applications: August to September. Scholarships applied for during this period will be granted in the following spring term.

  • Spring Applications: January to March. Scholarships applied for during this period will be granted in the following academic year.

CSU Systemwide Scholarships

The CSU Foundation offers a wide variety of scholarships for CSU international students, funded primarily by former students and friends and through donations.

CSU Systemwide Applications: February to April.  Scholarships applied for during this period will be granted in the following academic year.

President's Scholars Program

These scholarships are based on the merit of applicants who are shortlisted from a competitive pool of students enrolled in the University Honours Programme (UHP). The scholarship includes financial assistance along with priority registration, individualized academic support, small classes and the opportunity to take part in the on-campus residential honours community.

Eligibility: 

  • Must submit an admissions application before applying for scholarships.

  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or above on a scale of 4.0.

CSULB Need-Based Scholarships

For CSULB Need-based scholarships, an international student must submit a California  Dream Act Application (CADA) or Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 2, 2021. 

Eligibility:

  • Must submit an admissions application before applying for scholarships.

  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or above on a scale of 4.0.

While these campus scholarships are available for international students at CSULB, they can also explore scholarships offered by specific departments. The University also works with organisations such as Education USA, foreign embassies and consulates, College Board, and more to assist international students in financial aid and scholarships.
