The Graduate School and University Center of the CUNY is a public research institution, also providing a postgraduate degree in New York City. It is the main institution of the City University of New York system granting doctoral programs. The school is situated near Manhattan in the place called Midtown. CUNY started offering doctoral programs through its Division of Graduate Studies in 1961. It was most recently re-accredited by the Middle States in 2015. For a PhD in economics, it is ranked #68, for PhD in history it is ranked #34 and for psychology it is ranked #98. The edition of U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate School Ranking 2020 ranked and emphasized the Graduate Center Ph.D. program in Criminal Justice at 15th, its English program on 20th, its Sociology Ph.D. program on 28th, and its History doctoral program on the 34th, best in the nation.  
 
Infrastructure,Campus & Courses
 
The school is situated near Manhattan in the place called Midtown. They also have 30 research centers and institutes. The Graduate Center at the Fifth Avenue shares its building with Oxford University Press and New York Public Library. The Graduate Center also maintains a formal collaboration with the New York Public library which allows the faculty and students to access the library at any point in time. This eight-story building includes a gym, laundry facilities, lounge and rooftop terrace which gives views to the Midtown skyline. The students of the Graduate center also have access to New York University and Columbia University. 

The courses in the social sciences, humanities, and mathematics, and also the courses in the sciences requiring no laboratory work happens at the Graduate Center. The courses requiring laboratory work such as the clinical doctorates and courses in business, criminal justice, engineering, and social welfare take place at CUNY college campuses.  
 
Accomplishments & Alumni
 
Faculty members regularly receive prestigious honors and awards. Some recent examples include the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism, Nobel Prize, Grammy award and the New York City Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology, the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, and memberships in the National academy of Sciences and American Academy of Art and sciences. Many departments are well recognized and renowned internationally for their level of scholarship.
 
The Graduate Center has approximately graduated 15,000 alumni worldwide, including numerous academics, politicians, artists, and entrepreneurs to date. Graduate Center's alumni are various leading scholars across numerous disciplines, which include Douglas Crimp, Faye Ginsburg, Michael P. Jacobson, Maurice Berger, Nancy Fraser and many more.
 
Student Diversity & Visiting Companies
 
The Graduate Center has approximately 4,600 students. Students at the Graduate Center have the option of living in the housing that is located in East Harlem for graduates. The gender ratio is 57% female students and 43% male students. With 24% of the student body comprising of international students, the university is a perfect hub for students coming from different parts of the world. Various colleges and universities come for offering placements and internships options to the students namely: Central Bank of Chile, Carnegie Mellon University, Etsy New York, Department of Labor, New York, and Pace University-New York, etc.
