History, Affiliations & Rankings

With its first graduating class in 1901, San Francisco State University was originally established in the year 1899. It is known as SF State, San Francisco State or simply SFSU. The university has institutional affiliations with Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) besides program accreditations with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the School of Engineering is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

SFSU was ranked as 12th 'Best University in the United States' by PayScale and CollegeNET. It persistently ranks high in US News & World Report's 2020 edition Departmental Ranking list as #32 for Rehabilitation Counseling, #77 for Social Work, #78 for Public Health, #81 for Speech-Language Pathology, #94 for Public Affairs and #114 for Fine Arts.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Located just two miles from the Pacific coast, SFSU has a massive 141-acre campus housing over 30 academic, residence, community, services, conference, administrative and athletic facilities and buildings. San Francisco State is a part of the NCAA-II and has world-class athletic facilities and 10+ university teams competing in the division. It also has state of the art facilities for business, computing, chemistry, media, communication and film students among a list of 120+ fields of interests and vocations. SFSU has 6 major academic institutions such as  Business, Education, Liberal & Creative Arts, Ethnic Studies, Science & Engineering, and Health & Social Sciences. Accomplishments & Alumni

San Francisco State University is home to the ever famous School of Cinema, churning out an impressive list of thirteen Academy Award winners among its alumni. SFSU is also known for consistently producing law graduates that go on to be a part of the State Bar of California, many choosing to run for public office positions later on. It also partners with UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco for three doctoral programs. With the second-largest enrollment number of Asian and Filipino Americans in the CSU system, SFSU is known for its rich culture and challenging the status quo. The student body is diverse and is represented by 56% female students, 7% of international students representing 98 countries, 26% of students of Asian origin and 34% of Hispanic origin. SFSU is also known to have roughly 51% of the total student population as minority students, at all times.
