SUNY Buffalo State College, founded in 1871 is located in Buffalo, New York. The public college is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system with a student enrollment of 8,658 as of Fall 2019. It has been accredited by The Middle States Commission on Higher Education and all its academic programmes have been accredited by various professional organizations. Buffalo State College has climbed up to the 32nd position in the US in Social Mobility Index rankings 2019. It has also been receiving the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine since 2012.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Buffalo State College’s 125-acre campus comprises a great number of office buildings, residence halls, 5 schools, 12 centres, athletic buildings and more. Its residence halls house more than 2,200 first-year and upper-division students. It offers a total of 79 undergraduate majors, 64 graduate programs, and 11 post baccalaureate teacher certification programmes. Buffalo State is, in fact, the first SUNY institution to offer programmes in the fields of applied economics, art conservation, communication design, fashion and textile technology, fiber design, adult education, creativity, forensic chemistry, urban and regional planning, metal/jewelry design, higher education administration, and wood/furniture design.

Accomplishments & Alumni

Buffalo State University is ranked 4th among the top 100 universities in the Northern Region of the US by the Ranking Web of Universities .Buffalo State has 100,000 alumni, with more than living in Western New York and the rest living in around 120 countries. The most popular majors among Buffalo State alumni have been  elementary education, art education, exceptional education, business studies, and criminal justice. Some of the notable graduates associated with the college include Byron Brown, Patrick B.Burke, Diane English, Brian Higgins, and Grover Cleveland.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

SUNY Buffalo State College is one of the most inclusive colleges in the United States with students coming in from all ethnic backgrounds. Every year, the college takes in more than 200 overseas students and scholars for higher studies across an array of areas of study. The Career Development Center (CDC) at Buffalo State offers a 360 degree approach to career exploration, providing valuable experience, finding the right school for higher studies and so on.  Some of the leading companies that participate in Job and Internship programmes conducted by the colleges include Airgas, Alliance Advisory Group, Buffalo Toronto Public Media, Channel 4 News, CITI, Encorus Group Engineering, and many more.

COVID-19 Response

Keeping in mind the health and safety of all the students of SUNY Buffalo State College along with its faculty, staff and visitors, the college has introduced its Restart Plan as well as other measures. All details pertaining to its COVID-19 plan can be found below: 

  • All individuals on campus must use face coverings along with a PPE kit provided by the college. 
  • Classes that can be delivered online will remain remote.
  • In-person classes and hands-on experiences for courses, studios, labs and practicums may be permitted. Other classes will be delivered in hybrid format, which is a blend of in-person instruction and online lectures.
  • All cleaning protocols with special focus on high-touch surfaces are in place on campus.
  • Students returning to campus are required to undergo an online questionnaire based on symptoms and exposure to COVID-19.
  • The college is also developing a testing strategy for students, faculty and staff.
  • The Weigel Health Center will work with the college to conduct contact tracing for any COVID-positive student and subsequently quarantine that individual.
