SUNY Buffalo is a public research-intensive university in New York with the main campus in Buffalo and another campus in Amherst. Founded in 1846 as a private medical college, later became a part of the SUNY system.  The University of Buffalo has the largest endowment and research funding among all the universities in the SUNY system with a motto of sound mind in a sound body. It is a member of the Association of American Universities and is ranked 79 by the US News ranking agency in the 2020 edition of the best colleges. 

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

With more than 30,000 students and 13 colleges, the University of Buffalo is the largest public university in New York. University has the largest state-operated medical school, dental school, education school, business school, engineering school, pharmacy school, and only state-owned law school. SUNY Buffalo has three campuses: North Campus, South Campus and Downtown campus with operating revenue of $752 million for the financial year 2017-18. University has 125+ undergraduate programs, 205+ masters programs, and 90+ doctoral programs. The most sought after courses at SUNY Buffalo are Engineering, Business, Computer Science, Management, Biology and so on.

Accomplishments & Alumni 

The total research expenditure for the year 2017-18 was 401 million USD. Students and faculties at SUNY Buffalo are working on addressing local and challenges globally. Some of the researches are Cancer-Fighting Food, research on drugs preventing dementia in Alzheimer’s patients, Gene hacker i.e. wirelessly controlling a key gene for human growth through laser light. Studies on stress relief found that resveratrol is found in grapes, berries and red wines for treatment of depression and anxiety. 

Some of the notable Alumni are Wolf Blitzer – Journalist for CNN, Li Yanhang (Robin Li) co-founder of the largest Chinese-language search engine, Ellen Latham – Co-founder and partner of Orangetheory fitness, Superstar NFL linebacker — Khalil Mack and many more.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

Students from across 100 nations study at Undergraduate level in the university during 2017 with the diversity of Male: 64% and Female: 36%. The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) makes sure that students with different backgrounds feel safe and valued. 

The enrolled student population at University at Buffalo is 47.1% White, 12.3% Asian, 6.46% Black or African American, 5.93% Hispanic or Latino, 2.05% Two or More Races, 0.297% American Indian or Alaska Native. With 16.2% of international students, the university welcomes students from all over the world. Top recruiters include Google, Amazon, PwC, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Xerox, CVS Health and so on.

COVID-19 Response

While students are worried about the various changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, SUNY Buffalo is taking all necessary measures to protect the health and safety of the UB community. Below mentioned are the university's return to campus plans and other updates:

  • The university has developed comprehensive health and safety guidelines to offer a safe campus experience. These include 14-day mandatory quarantine before returning to campus, use a virtual screening tool before visiting campus, use face coverings on campus and so on. 

  • Classes will start from August 31 and conclude on December 21, 2020. 

  • UB is accepting applications and enrolling students for Fall 2020 semester.

  • The university is shifting to a blend of online, hybrid and online classes with in-person exams for international students.

  • Students can access UB’s academic support services online and schedule virtual appointments to speak with a staff member.

  • Due to the current distance learning mode of education, students who were working on campus may experience difficulties. 

  • Many departments have created separate pages for updates on academics, admissions and student services.

Scholarships at SUNY Buffalo for International Undergraduate Students

International Admissions Scholarship

  • Open to all incoming freshmen and transfer students, the international admissions scholarships are renewable for students with good academic standing. 

  • The student must be enrolled in a full-time programme at the university. 

  • The scholarship will be open only to fall semester candidates who submit a complete application before April 15.

  • It will be awarded after a holistic review of GPA and test scores and other criteria.

  • The announcements will be made via email, between December 20 and April 20.

In addition, the university also offers athletic scholarships, an instalment tuition payment plan, student employment on and off-campus and other scholarships and grants from many nonprofit services and government organizations.

Scholarships at SUNY Buffalo for International Graduate Students

International students applying for graduate degrees are eligible for various scholarships, assistantships, grants and fellowships from different departments and programmes. These awards may include a full or partial tuition scholarship to help the student concentrate on research or coursework.

Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

Applicants will have to apply for this scholarship by December and selected candidates will receive a $10,000 award for the next academic year.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must identify as female.

  • Must seek admission to a full-time programme for the current academic year.

  • The field of study should be computer science, computer engineering or a related technical domain.

  • Must have a strong academic record and show leadership and passion for inspiring women to get into computer science.

Point Foundation Scholarship

The deadline for the scholarship is January. It ought to contribute to the student’s cost of study.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must identify as an LGBTQ person that requires financial support.

  • Must be enrolled in a program at the university and have a proven track record of leadership.

  • Must also have a high GPA.

NCAA Scholarships and Grants

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) awards $2.6 million to over 350 students to help current and former athletes take up additional educational requirements.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must have a 3.2 or higher GPA.

  • Must be a student athlete enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme.
