History, Affiliations & Rankings

Established in 1908, Alfred State is a public college in Alfred, New York. President Boothe C. Davis of Alfred University persuaded the New York State legislature to locate the New York State School of Agriculture at the Alfred University Campus. The college is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. It is the Technical College at Alfred, granting baccalaureate degrees in 30 areas, associate degrees in 53 areas, and certificates. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and is a member of the Rochester Area Colleges consortium. The institution is ranked #10 in Regional Colleges North (tie) by US News & World Report  2020. The Times Higher Education ranks it > 600th in the US Rankings 2020.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Located in New York, the institution has a 1,062 acres campus size. Alfred State offers more than 80 majors in the arts, applied technology, architecture and management, and engineering technology.  The Bret Llewellyn Art Gallery at SUNY Alfred State in Alfred, NY, founded in 2010, is located in the campus Engineering Technology Building. The college is divided into the following schools: The School of Arts & Sciences, The School of Applied Technology (located at the Wellsville campus), and The School of Architecture, Management and Engineering Technology. When students consult objective sources for college rankings, ASC is among the top 10 schools in the US for 17 different majors. ASC ranks top seven in New York State for an additional 30 majors. Alfred State is known for its courses in Nursing AAS/BS along with Masonry, Building Trades: Building Construction, Human Services Management, IT: Applications Software Development, Automotive Service Technician, Computer Engineering Technology and Digital Media and Animation.

Accomplishments & Alumni

The athletic department is a member of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference, the Colonial States Athletic Conference, the North Eastern Athletic Conference, and the Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Alfred State is a member of the Division III level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Some of the notable alumni are the founder of Paychex Blase Thomas Golisano, Landscape architect Peter Trowbridge, Juwan Gross, Deborah Huppman and Brian Hierl.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

About 1400 students were enrolled in 2019. Of this 67.1% were men and 34.9% were women. A modest 1.3 % of Asian students also enrolled in 2019. The student to faculty ratio at Alfred State is 18:1. Ninety-nine percent of recent grads have jobs or are continuing their education in their chosen field. Campus Recreation offers many facets for students to be engaged physically, socially, and emotionally. Intramural sports have a league format where teams are created at the start of the semester and then played on a weekly basis. Top organizations where the students can be found working is Corning Incorporated, Wegmans Food Markets, Paychex, Alstom, and Xerox.
