A public research university, the University of Michigan was founded in 1817 in Detroit as the University of Michigania. The university has been called a Public Ivy that has been ranked among the top public universities in the US time and again. With a history of over 200 years, the university is the oldest university in Michigan and is a founding member of the Association of American Universities. It is further affiliated with organisations including BTAA, URA and APLU. The 2019-20 QS World University Rankings named the university as the top U.S. Public University. In 2019, the Times HIgher Ed ranked the University of Michigan 15th in its World Reputation Rankings and Wallethub ranked it #1 among the Best Small College Towns in America.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The university campus spans across a combined area of over 860 acres that includes more than 584 major buildings. The Ann Arbor campus is divided into a total of four campuses including the North, Central, South and Medical. While the Central and South campus areas share a common border, the North campus is separated from them by the Huron River. U-M offers over 200 undergraduate majors, 90 master’s and 100 doctoral programs in the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) as well as in architecture, nursing, social work, business, medicine, law, pharmacy, public health,  dentistry and more. 102 of its grad programs feature in the top 10 in the U.S. News & World Report 2019.

Accomplishments & Alumni

U-M prides itself on over 630,000 living alumni across the world who have been successful in creating phenomena and leading the country. From U.S. representatives to popular actors, Michigan’s alumni have made their mark across fields and made an impact on the community and the world. Their long list of notable alumni include seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, 38th President of the United States Gerald Ford, neurosurgeon and CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, actress Lucy Liu, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Arthur Miller and co-founder of Google Larry Page. Overall, the university stands out for having produced a U.S. President, 36 Pulitzer Prize winners, 27 Rhodes Scholars, nine Nobel laureates and one Mitchell Scholar.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

At Michigan, students came from over 82 Michigan countries, 50 states and over 130 countries. They represent the diverse community of the university, with more than one-third of their international students enrolled in undergraduate programs. U-M boasts employing more than 4,000 students every year in part-time, temporary, work-study and full-time job opportunities that not only ensure competitive pay but also offer hours to fit busy schedules, career advancement, skill development and scope for business networking. In addition, the University Career Centre helps Michigan students connect with employers through virtual job and internship fairs, look for jobs and find job and internship listings on its portal.
