With its roots travelling back to over 175 years, i.e. 1838, the University was recognised under a different alias, i.e. Medical College of Hampden-Sydney, later known as the Medical College of Virginia. It was in 1968 that along with the Richmond Professional Institute, Medical College of Virginia merged together to form an educational institution, now known as the Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University has been gaining recognition, awards and ranks in various categories from research, hospital to being the best universities for diversity and minorities. A total of 25 of its programmes and courses have been recognised as the top 50 courses in the country. VCU is a public research-based university situated in the heart of Richmond, Virginia, USA. Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The campus of Virginia Commonwealth University is spread over 169 acres, consisting of academic and residential infrastructure for the benefit of the students. Scholarship for International Students at Virginia Commonwealth University

At Virginia Commonwealth University, scholarships may be based on academic merit, leadership, artistic talent or community service All meritorious applicants are considered for university-level scholarships if they apply for the Fall semester by November 1. No separate application is required for the same. In addition to that, a limited number of scholarship opportunities are also open to transfer students from the Virginia Community College system who have obtained at least 45 semester credit hours.

Scholarships for Freshman Applicants at Virginia Commonwealth University

  • The Common Application must be submitted to the university latest by November 1.

  • Finalists in the university’s National Merit Scholarship Programme who apply by November 1 and inform the National Merit Scholarship Corp. by May 31 that VCU is their first choice will be considered for a VCU Presidential Scholarship. 

Scholarships for Transfer Applicants at Virginia Commonwealth University

Applicants must submit the online electronic application by March 15 along with an option two-page essay in either of the two topics given below: 

  • Write Page 87 of your autobiography: One should be creative and to the point as to which part of their life should be mentioned on this page. 

  • Write about the biggest challenge who have had to deal with and what you did to overcome it. What did you learn from this experience?

Types of International Scholarships at Virginia Commonwealth University

  • Merit-based scholarships: Awarded only during the Fall semester which covers in-state costs only.

  • Four-year scholarships: Renewable for up to 3 consecutive years provided recipients earn a minimum of 28 credit hours on a full-time basis over the Spring and Fall semesters. They must also maintain an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher. 
  • Additional scholarships: Awarded by the Office of Admission to recognise an applicant's academic achievements, leadership or other personal qualities.

University Undergraduate Scholarships

Presidential

Duration of the Scholarship: Four years
Value: Covers tuition fees up to $16,000 per year (maximum amount of $8,000 per semester), for an estimated total value of $114,356.
Eligibility: 

  • Cumulative GPA should be between 4.50-4.72.

  • SAT Scores based on critical reading and math scores should range from 1490 to 1550.

Provost

Duration of the Scholarship: Four years
Value: Covers tuition fees up to $16,000 per year (maximum amount of $8,000 per semester), taking the total value close to $64,000.
Eligibility:

  • Cumulative GPA should be between 4.39-4.66.

  • SAT Scores based on critical reading and math scores should range from 1380 to 1490.

Deans’

Duration of the Scholarship: Four years
Value: Covers tuition fees up to $16,000 per year (maximum amount of $8,000 per semester), taking the total value close to $32,000.
Eligibility:

  • Cumulative GPA should be between 4.22-4.50.

  • SAT Scores based on critical reading and math scores should range from 1330 to 1440.

VCCS Transfer Scholarship

Value: One-half of in-state tuition fees. 
Eligibility: 

  • Must have earned at least 45 credit hours at a Virginia Community College

In addition to these scholarships, individual schools and departments at the university offer scholarships to incoming freshmen. Scholarship aid is also available for applicants part of a VCU athletic team.
