Established in 1882 in the village of Ettrick, Virginia State University is one of Virginia's two land-grant institutions. Since its foundation, the University has earned accreditations from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, AACSB – Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, ABET – Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, ACEND – Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, ACPHA – Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration and five other programs specific accreditation body. The university has been ranked 61st in Regional Universities South by the U.S. News and World. 

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Located on a bluff overlooking the Appomattox River, the 231- acre campus features a fully cabled, 280,000-volume library, a new science and engineering center, a computer technology center along, an in-house radio station, 11 residence halls, 18 academic buildings and a 412-acre agriculture research facility known as Randolph Farm. VSU gives students an opportunity to choose from 31 undergraduate degree programs, 17 graduate degree programs, two doctoral degree programs, and seven certificate programs offered through the six colleges, namely- The College of Agriculture, The Reginald F. Lewis College of Business, The College of Education, The College of Engineering and Technology, The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and The College of Natural and Health Sciences.

Accomplishments & Alumni 

VSU has proved to be an accomplished university by achieving various titles and grants. The Department of Art and Design at VSU was called the Best Fine Arts Program. The Criminal Justice program secured a third-place among the 40 Virginia institutions analysed by correctionalofficer.org. College of Agriculture is among the 15 exhibitors and vendors out of 235 to win an Award of Excellence at the State Fair of Virginia. The Trojan Football Team was given the title of Northern Division Champions in 2017 with a 10-0 overall record. Deshauna Barber, an alumna of VSU, was crowned Miss USA and was one of the nine finalists out of 86 contestants for Miss Universe. Another alumna, Christine Darden, was referenced in an Oscar-nominated film “Hidden Figures.”

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

The university is primarily known for its high population of students of colour. A big fraction of the population is out-of-state. The population maintains a good ratio of male to female with 42.6% male and 57.4% female students. VSU provides ample career opportunities to students to connect with great employers like IBM through career expos, VSU uses the Symplicity (Trojans4Hire) system for the same which is fully accessible online for faculty, staff, student, and employer users. Other top employers include Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Amazon and so on.
