History, Affiliations & Rankings

Founded in 1867, West Virginia University (WVU) is a public one among a dozen schools in the United States that are land-grant, doctoral research universities with a comprehensive medical school. The university holds accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, ABET approving nine engineering programs and many other program specialized accreditations. WVU is a “Doctoral Universities: Highest Research Activity” or “R1”, a title awarded to only 130 out of 4,500 plus universities nation-wide as classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. It is a space-grant university, a part of a network formed for outer-space research. Every year since 2006, WVU receives the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. According to the US News ranking 2020, West Virginia University is ranked #228 in National Universities. 

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

WVU system has four campuses located in the state of Virginia with a combined land of 15,880 acres that includes 518 buildings, seven libraries, Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) System- computer-driven cars and many more services. The WVU Institute of Technology in Beckley offers over 35 majors, one of the top 100 undergraduate engineering programmes nationally. WVU Potomac State College in Keyser offers more than 60 majors with one of the lowest fee rates. The WVU Morgantown campus, main campus, offers 380+ majors in different fields like agriculture, arts, and sciences, business, and economics, creative arts, dentistry, human services, engineering and mineral resources, law, media, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, sport sciences, with hundreds of distance education and online classes. The WVU has Health Sciences campuses in Charleston and Martinsburg, 10 experimental farms and four forests and WVU Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp.
                                                         
Accomplishments & Alumni 

WVU collaborated with NASA to launch West Virginia’s first satellite into orbit on December 16, 2018. It regularly ranks nationally for prestigious scholarships. It is one of the only two universities in the United States to offer a Ph.D. in forensic science. Now a requirement for all medical students, a clinical addiction program was first offered by the WVU. Only four institutions including WVU in the nation offer joint petroleum and natural gas engineering. The Aquatics Therapy programme in the exercise physiology major is offered only by WVU in the nation. WVU’s The David and JoAnn Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety (STEPS) is the world’s only fully-accredited healthcare simulation center. WVU has produced over 200,000 graduates worldwide including television and movie star Chris Sarandon; Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick; Michael Ammar the magician; Jon McBride, an astronaut at NASA; Katherine G. Johnson, NASA mathematician, and physicist awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015; U.S. Senator Joe Manchin among the others.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

WVU was included in the list of Top Colleges for Diversity and presented with the Higher Education in Diversity Award. The university currently has 2,315 international students representing at least 49 countries. WVU has organised alumni chapters in Shanghai, China; Tokyo, Japan; Malaysia; and Kuwait. The university takes various steps to maintain its high employment rate by organising frequent job fairs and using two-way employment platforms such as Symplicity and Handshake which are also used by the Fortune 500 companies and the government agencies for hiring purposes.
