NFSC Overview

National Fire Service College was established in 1956 at Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. It was later shifted to Nagpur, Maharashtra in June 1957, where it is currently located.

It has a huge campus of 43 acres. It has experienced faculty in fire engineering, fire ground operations, electrical, management, mechanical, civil, fire law, paramedics, psychology, physics, and maths. The library has an array of books of over 10000. The laboratories are state-of-the-art and equipped with the latest instruments.

The college also organizes various extra-curricular activities such as workshops, seminars and lectures by renowned professionals in the field. The National Fire Service College campus is designed keeping in mind the needs of the future. All the infrastructure is updated regularly.

The college has laboratories with the latest types of equipment. The Wireless Communication Laboratory and the Paramedics Laboratory are a valuable part of its facilities. What’s New at National Fire Service College Nagpur?

  • The ministry of home affairs inaugurated a fixed fire fighting installation lab and simulation zone at the National Fire Service College, Nagpur in 2019. The purpose of the simulation zone is to practice fire loss prevention. 

It is the first of its kind where such type of training will be provided in a simulation zone. The training is aimed at fire officers and engineers who graduated in fire protection working in the area of fire loss prevention in India. The simulation zone is equipped with a heart-pump room, riser system, get-wet laboratory, CO2 total flooding system, and water mist system.

  • Representative of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., Dipti Gharat, inaugurated the student chapter of the Society for Fire Prevention Engineering (SFPE) in 2018. This is the first one at this college. Society for Fire Prevention Engineering is a non-profit organization. It is a professional society that represents the trained personnel in the field of fire safety engineering and fire protection.

  • This college started a four-year degree course in B.E. Fire Engineering from the 2015-2016 session. This NFSC course is approved by the AICTE.

  • It signed a memorandum of understanding with Underwriters Laboratories Inc., a leader in global safety science, in 2021. The aim is to advance lithium-ion battery fire safety and standardization in India with better collaboration. This MoU is part of a fire research study “Battery Fires: Study of Response Strategy of Indian Fire Services”. 

According to the memorandum, National Fire Safety College and the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. will look for opportunities to team up with other organizations. These organizations would help guide in matters of battery fires in electric mobility & grid energy storage systems.

Eligibility Criteria for 2022

BE (Fire Engineering) Admission

Selection criteria: Selection is done based on the All India Ranking obtained in the JEE (Main) exam and the physical and medical fitness requirements.

Eligibility criteria: The following conditions should be fulfilled-

> The candidate should be an Indian national. They should have cleared the std. XII exam of any state board or its equivalent with the subjects English, Physics, Mathematics, and Biology /Chemistry/Biotechnology/ Technical vocational subject. Marks secured should be a minimum of 45% (40% for SC/ST candidates).

> The candidate must have a rank in the JEE (Main) exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

> Those who have passed the Class 12 exam outside India should get an eligibility certificate from the RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur. They also require a rank in the JEE (Main) exam.

Sub-Officers Course Admission

Selection criteria: Candidates not sponsored by any government undertaking (direct entrants) have to give the All India Entrance Examination conducted by the college. Sponsored candidates can apply online and do not have to take the exam.

Eligibility criteria:

> For direct entrants (private), the candidate should be a graduate from a recognized university or have a diploma in any branch of engineering approved by AICTE or the Board of Technical Education.

> Sponsored candidates require two years of regular service as a Fireman/ Leading Fireman/ Driver-cum Pump Operator to be eligible for National Fire Service College admission.

> Physical and medical standards are the same as those for the BE (Fire Engineering) course.

Station Officers Course Admission

Selection criteria: The sponsored candidates can apply through the online platform of the college.

Eligibility criteria:

> Sponsored candidates require two years of regular service as a Sub-Officer/ five years as a Leading Fireman or Driver-cum-Pump Operator.

> The same physical and medical standards for BE (Fire Engineering) are applicable for this NFSC course also.

Divisional Officers Course Admission

Selection criteria: The sponsored candidates can apply online for this on the platform specified by the college.

Eligibility criteria:

> Sponsored candidates require two years of regular service as a Station Officer or five years as a Sub-Officer.

> The candidate should have a valid Heavy Motor Vehicle Driving License on the date of applying and during the training period.

> Physical and medical standards are the same as those for the BE (Fire Engineering) course.

Go to NFSC’s official website and download the “Admission Brochure” and the application form.

Read all the instructions and the eligibility criteria carefully while applying.

Fill in the required details in the form as per the instructions and send the form along with a demand draft for the application charges. 

Alternatively, candidates can apply online, fill out the form and upload the required documents. 

Make the payment of Rs 500 as application charges.

Candidates who are not sponsored can apply by following these steps-

Now choose the “online application form for All India Entrance Exam for Sub-Officers course”.

Fill in the details online.

Take a printout of the National Fire Service College form and attach the required documents.

The indispensable parts of the NFSC infrastructure as discussed below are important for an effective learning experience.

Laboratory

The National Fire Service College laboratories are maintained with the latest equipment. The trained staff is capable of demonstrating the chemical actions of multiple fire prevention measures and their counter-reaction. This is very useful when such measures are to be taken in the presence of hazardous chemicals or any electrical equipment.

The students of B.E. (Fire Engineering) perform experiments related to fire prevention and protection. In this, they learn about chemical extinguishers, foam compounds, and dry-powders along with their testing based on the Indian Standard Specifications.

There are two special laboratories at this college- the Wireless Communication Laboratory and the Paramedics Laboratory.

The Wireless Communication Laboratory has radio receivers of almost all types, instruments that Fire Officers use in the field like static and mobile radios, chargers, walkie-talkies, wave analyzers, and many more. The students are exposed to handling and maintenance of such equipment. A considerable amount of tactical exercises are conducted utilizing the installed equipment of the Mobile Control Van.

In the Paramedics Laboratory, the students are given theoretical and practical training by experts to handle any kind of medical emergency. Training is given in basic anatomy, first aid, burn injuries, a study of disinfectants, stretcher drills, cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, and the role fire officers play in chemical, nuclear and biological disasters. Training also includes paramedical care like injuries, animal bites, fractures, unconsciousness, etc. Additionally, students visit hospitals under the Chief Medical Officer’s supervision.

Library

The NFSC library has a vast collection of over 10000 books. Most of these pertain to fire safety engineering. It has numerous journals, both national and international, from various organizations. It has a subscription to magazines and journals in the field of fire engineering. This keeps it abreast of the current practices and latest developments from the likes of USA and UK, and institutions such as the National Fire Protection Association, Institute of Fire Engineers (India), Bureau of Indian Standards, and LPA.

It has ample copies of encyclopedias. There are General Encyclopedias as well as those on Safety, Health, and Environment. Access to a rich collection of books makes this a good knowledge hub for the students and the teaching faculty alike.

Videos and Films

The college has facilitated its classrooms with overhead projectors and slide projectors. They are used to show films and videos of fire fighting activities to students as part of their training. With more than 130 such videos available, the students get an opportunity to see how perilous situations are handled in reality.

Workshop

The NFSC workshop is also an integral part of the infrastructure. It is equipped with numerous instruments like primers, cut model pumps, and tools needed for repairing the available appliances. The workshop also houses various electrical equipment and automobiles. It enables the students to have hands-on experience with types of machinery and equipment vital to fire fighting and protection.

Dear Pranav, yes, there is a very nice scope after studying fire engineering if you have completed from NFSC Nagpur, as many reputable PSUs (like ONGC, IOCL, GAIL, SAIL, BCPL), government companies (state fire services, different airports), top private companies (L&T, Reliance), and many more come every year for placements for these 60 students. Many companies also have off-campus placements, so in the future you can also apply for them.

Prospective candidates have the option to either fill out the form online or download it from the website.
