UGC to Merge JEE, NEET into CUET; Plans for Single Exam

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering merging Engineering and Medical entrance exams like JEE Main and NEET into CUET UG, which will be a common entrance exam. According to the proposed plan, instead of taking three entrance examinations for the four courses - mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, students will be able to take single exam once. Subsequently they will be able to explore various fields of study and career options.

Currently, around 43 lakh students take three main entrance exams in India: the engineering entrance "JEE Main", the medical entrance "NEET", and "CUET-UG". Through this initiative, the aspiring students will get relieved from the pressure of appearing for different entrance exams which have the same syllabus and subjects.

For students interested in engineering, their grades in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry could be utilized to create a final rank list, and the same for medical students. Furthermore, if students do not choose to pursue a career in engineering, they will be able to enroll in a variety of different degree programmes with this one exam.

About the Merger

The country's highest educational regulatory authority, the UGC, is organizing a committee to consult with various stakeholders before coming out with final decisions. According to the UGC Chairman, M Jagdish Kumar, it is proposed that all of these entrance examinations are to be merged into a single core exam for various fields. So that students do not have to take several entrance exams which are based on the same syllabus.

According to Kumar, the goal of this plan is to ensure that students are not under pressure to take several admission exams and that their mastery of the topics is appraised. Typically, during this time, universities provide opportunities to study engineering, medicine, or other areas. Merit will be produced for students who choose to pursue engineering and medical education according to the disciplines necessary. Students who do not choose to do so will be able to enroll in numerous courses through CUET-UG.
