With a humble beginning in 1906, the University of Northern Philippines was founded as a shop department of the Old Vigan High School. Within a year of its establishment, the university started to play a vital role in training the youth for independent and democratic ways of life. The university gave its first batch of graduates in 1956 under the new trade-technical curriculum. Due to its continuous innovative approach towards higher education, it is now among the top 130 universities in the Philippines. The University of Northern Philippines is fully affiliated to the Commission on High Education (CHED), Philippines and is accredited by NMC (National Medical Council) and WHO (World Health Organisation). The university is also recognised by the United States Medical License Examination (USMLE), Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and Educational Commission For Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
The University of Northern Philippines is spread over four different campuses located in Sinait, Santa Maria, Quimmarayan and Vigan. With its main campus situated in one of the New7Wonders Cities - Vigan, UNPCM (University of Northern Philippines College of Medicine) houses world-class infrastructure. The list of facilities provided here includes a library, seminar halls, classrooms, hostels, laboratory, auditorium-cum-museum, computer labs, etc. The university provides on-campus hostels. However, it is not a residential campus so students have the provision to opt-out of the on-campus accommodation facility. UNPCM offers an MS+MD course that is equivalent to the MBBS programme. Completed in a span of 64 months, the programme follows an American system of medical education. The programme is offered in the English language. NEET or NMAT scores are compulsory for MBBS admissions at the University of Northern Philippines.

The University of Northern Philippines affiliated hospitals are some of the premier healthcare medical centres in Vigan City. Apart from providing medical services, surgical and diagnostic services, these UNP affiliated hospitals are also used to provide clerkships to medical graduates who are in the final year of their programme. Being one of the oldest and first universities in Northern Luzon, the University of Northern Philippines aims at enlightening underprivileged students.
