What PTE Score Range Represents?

Earlier in this PTE Score Chart 2022, the PTE score ranges and their skill level were summarised. Here, we have elaborated on each PTE score range, their usage/purpose and the skills they represent of the candidate.

PTE Band Score: 85 - 90

As per the PTE score chart, the PTE Academic score of 85 - 90 is the highest score range awarded by Pearson VUE.

Purpose: 

• The score is applicable in all settings.

• Minimum eligibility criteria are way lower than the score range.

Skill Representation: 

Those who have scored within this PTE score range are understood to be:

• Able to easily understand all that is virtually read or heard.

• Able to summarise information from different written and spoken sources.

• Able to reconstruct arguments and accounts incoherent presentation.

• Able to express themselves spontaneously, fluently, and precisely.

• Able to differentiate between finer shades of meaning even in complex situations.

PTE Band Score: 76 - 84

The PTE score chart asserts that a PTE score between the range of 76 - 84 is considered a good score.

Purpose: 

• The score is applicable at all universities.

• The score is a requirement for an Australia PR skilled migration visa instead of IELTS bands.

• Masters and PhD courses may require PTE academic scores in this range.

Skill Representation: 

The candidate is understood to be:

• Able to understand a wide range of demanding and longer texts.

• Able to recognise implicit meaning.

• Able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.

• Able to use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.

• Able to produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects.

• Able to control the use of organisational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices.

PTE Band Score: 59 - 75

PTE Academic score range of 59 - 75 is considered a good score for various universities and other academic purposes.

Purpose: 

• Admission to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD courses is based on this score range.

• The scores are accepted for certain streams of Australia PR visas as well.

• The score range is well applied for employment purposes.

Skill Representation: 

The candidate is understood to be:

• Able to understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics.

• Able to include in technical discussions in their field of specialisation.

• Able to interact with a degree of oral fluency and spontaneity with native speakers without strain for either party.

• Able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.

• Able to explain a viewpoint on a topical issue by giving advantages and disadvantages of various options.

PTE Academic Score: 43 - 58

PTE Score range of 43 - 58 could still be used as a valid score for certain options.

Purpose: 

• Admission to Bachelor level courses may be achieved at various universities within this score range.

• The scores could be used to apply for certificate and diploma courses as well.

Skill Representation: 

The candidate is understood to be:

• Able to understand main points of clear standard input on familiar matters, regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

• Able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst in an area where language is spoken.

• Able to produce simple connected text on topics, which are familiar or of personal interest.

• Able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions.

• Able to briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

PTE Academic Score: 30 - 42

As per the PTE score chart, the PTE score range of 30 - 42 may be acceptable for certain courses but it is not enough for academic purposes.

Purpose: 

• Foundational courses can be applied by the students within this score range.

Skill Representation: 

The candidate is understood to be:

• Able to understand and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.

• Able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

• Able to describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment, and matters in areas of immediate need.

PTE Academic Score: 10 - 29 

PTE Academic score of 10 - 29 is not applicable for any purposes. It is too low.

Purpose: 

• The score is quite low for all purposes, from academic to employment. So, PTE scores within this range cannot be often used. 

Skill Representation: 

The candidate is understood to be:

• Able to use and understand familiar everyday expressions.

• Able to use very basic phrases aimed at very concrete basic needs.

• Able to interact simply if the other person talks slowly and clearly and can offer help.

How to Score Well in PTE Academic?

To score well in PTE Academic 2022, the following tips could be adopted by the test takers:

• Utilise Reading Time: A lot of questions in the test are text-based. In this case, the candidates are advised to make proper use of the reading time available to them. The better they understand the context of the question, the better they will answer the questions.

• Increase Audio Understanding: To ensure proper cognitive abilities, students need to take steps in increasing their understanding of spoken texts and lectures. They can refer to auditory sources of language for practice, such as movies and songs.

• Prepare with Unconventional Sources: Students can make use of unconventional sources for preparation such as newspapers, and other language sources. They make for interesting yet good practice material.

• Build Strong Vocabulary: PTE test-takers need to refer to and read as many informative articles as possible to build a good vocabulary.

• Refer to Various Fields: The material which is referred to should not just be language-based but should span across various subjects to increase an understanding of the grammar, vocabulary, text use, etc. 

• Familiarise with Rules and Regulations: Test-takers need to properly understand the rules and regulations of the test well before appearing to attempt the test.

• Advance Preparation of Required Documents: All the required identification proofs for the test date must be prepared in advance, along with the admit card and other required things.

Who Accepts PTE Scores?

Test-takers can use their PTE scores for various purposes, such as higher education, admission, applying for a job, scholarships, fellowships, immigration, etc. There are many global organisations and institutions which accept PTE scores as proof of a candidate’s proficiency in the English language.

Countries for Skilled Migration

PTE scores can also be used to apply for a PR visa in English-speaking countries. Test-takers who wish to apply for PR visas must know that the score requirement is very high for migration purposes. Many countries, like Australia, might not even mention a minimum score requirement, but, lower PTE scores do not help in getting a visa.

There are many international foundations and trusts that offer scholarships, fellowships, start-ups, and other fund-based support to eligible applicants. They often require applicants to satisfy certain eligibility criteria, including a certain level of proficiency in the English language. In such a case, candidates can submit their PTE scores. 

That said, the minimum PTE score requirement, except for language-based scholarships and scholarships and fellowships is often not mentioned.
