Have a Clear Set of Goals for Studying in the US: When asked, you must have a clear idea of why you chose the US as your study destination and what goals you seek to achieve while studying in the country. While answering, make sure you have covered aspects such as how you wish to spend your time in the country, contribute to the respective area of study and your post-graduation plans.
Employment: Never say that you are going to the US with the hope to work after graduation. Try to be as straightforward as possible while talking of your main objective to go to the US, which is to pursue higher education and return home at the end of the programme. Also, if your spouse is accompanying you to the US, she/he would be given an F-2 visa, denying them to be employed during their stay.
Get an Idea of the Programme and How it is Ideal for Your Future Plans: Your interviewer would be interested in knowing why you have chosen the programme and the reasons for which you want to study it in the United States. Be direct and let the consular officer know that you are going to the US to study and not just for the sake of immigrating.
Display a Positive Attitude: Nobody wants to have a chat with someone who is putting his/her negativity out there. Do not engage in any argument and even if you are not comfortable with the situation/ question, try not to make it visible on your face. In case you are denied the student visa, be calm and leave. You can later ask for the reason in writing.
Be to the Point: Consular officers would be bound to conduct short interviews because of the volume of applications and limited time. So, it is your responsibility to make their experience with you extremely smooth and quick, giving as concise answers as possible.
Practice All Common Questions with Someone: It is recommended that you go through the common F-1 visa interview questions not only to have an idea but also to practice their answers in English. This would improve your English speaking skills and prevent you from uttering something that they might not want to hear.
Gather All the Required Documents: Here is a list of documents that you should keep handy at your interview:
A valid passport with a validity date at least six months beyond your duration of stay
Recent passport size photograph
Payment receipt of application fees for SEVIS
Form I -20
