Canada is now easing restrictions for Express Entry applicants who have completed their courses online during the Covid-19 outbreak. As per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), candidates who finished their study online or through distance learning from March 2020 to August 2022 will now be qualified for Canadian educational credential points.

Canada PR Now Available for Distance Learning Students Via Express Entry

According to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) webpage, candidates who completed their education online or opted for a distance learning module during the pandemic are eligible to apply for Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry. However, only recently, the Canadian immigration minister, Sean Fraser tweeted about Express Entry Draws Resumed to Fill Job Vacancies.

The new policy only applies to candidates who obtained a diploma, degree, or online certifications from Canadian universitiesduring the eligibility period, as per the IRCC website. This is only a one-time measure allowing applicants to apply for PR who were at a disadvantage during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Generally, if 50% of any degree programme is completed online, it is considered distance learning and it does not credit toward the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). However, according to a recent change from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), candidates who finished their study online or through distance learning from March 2020 to August 2022 will now be qualified for Canadian educational credential points.

Rules and Regulations to Apply for Canadian PR

The IRCC also advised applicants who had already claimed a degree or certification to update their profiles by responding to three questions in the section on educational background. The three questions are as follows:

  • How many academic credits did the candidate get in Canada?

  • How much in-person study did the applicant undergo to earn the certification?

  • How much full-time education did the applicant obtain?

It should be noted that if specific fields are left blank, a candidate's Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points score may decrease. They may lose out on being invited to submit an application for permanent residency, as per the IRCC website.
