Among the top countries to study in, Canada has also been one of the top choices, especially for Indian students. Now, reports reveal that choosing Canada for higher studies will help increase the chances of getting permanent residency.

Is it Easier to Get Canadian PR as an International Student?

Over the past few years, in fact, decades, especially during the pandemic when the world over imposed strict border entry restrictions, Canada had been a pioneer in facilitating and accommodating international students, in a safe and efficient manner.

According to an Indian Express report, data from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) revealed that 97.5% of international graduates who had submitted a permanent resident application in Canada between January and October 2021, were successful in receiving legal permission to stay and work in the country. This same success rate for other permanent residency applicants had been reported to be at 91.5%, the Indian Express added.

Data published by CIC News revealed that international graduates who found work either during their studies or after graduation stood a better chance at becoming permanent residents. This chance was further boosted if they had higher-paying jobs. IRCC data also highlighted that Indian students were one of the largest international student cohorts in the country, with 1,30,000 Indian students being approved for studies in Canada between January and November 2021, reported the Indian Express.

Canadas Post Graduate Work Permit, commonly known as PGWP, had been introduced by the Canadian government in a bid to help international students be employed under an organisation in the country, giving them the much-needed professional experience. Several study-abroad experts state that the combination of work experience and proficiency in one of the official languages of the country automatically puts international students in a much better position to receive permanent residency.

The country's efforts in attracting international students have paid off, as thousands of students choose to study in Canada after considering the quality of education offered, graduate outcomes and opportunities that international students have access to. Collegedekhos CBO and Head of the Study Abroad team, Tarun Aggarwal revealed to the Indian Express that half the queries received by the team are for Canada, where 90% of the students wish to pursue short-term courses. Additionally, students have been curious for courses in MBA, Master in Management, Supply Chain Management, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering among others.

Study-abroad experts across the country suggest building up your Comprehensive Ranking System or CRS scores, to help ensure your chances of being selected for permanent residency goes up. Several components make up a candidates CRS score, which is improved by earning a Canadian higher education degree, a Canadian work experience and is further boosted by the candidates language proficiency. If any given candidate, is able to prove all three of these, or even two of the above, the chances of having their study visas be converted to permanent residency, become high.

The Canadian government had introduced a merit-based point system, wherein each Express Entry candidate earns a specific score. Through this system, candidates can find it easier to gauge their chances of receiving a PR.

While academic degrees, work experience and language proficiency immensely affect the CRS score, blood relations in the country as well as a candidates age, also play crucial roles.
