IRCC Asks International Students to Apply for Canadian Study Permit by May 15

International students looking forward to enrolling themselves at Candian higher education institutions may not get their study permit before the fall semester if they fail to submit their applications by May 15.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), on its official website, advised all international students planning to attend the fall semester to make sure to submit their complete applications latest by May 15, 2021.

It added that if they failed to do so, the IRCC will try to process it as soon as possible although applicants may not get the final decision before the fall semester starts.

Immigration officials in Canada have promised to process study permit applications by August 6, 2021, in time, only if they are submitted by May 15. Students will then be able to attend Canadian colleges and universities, outside of Quebec, according to their plan.

The IRCC website also added that they would not be able to process study permit applications in time or by August 6, 2021, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions including reduced service at visa application centres and other providers.

This tighter deadline, unlike previous years, has been introduced to let international students have enough time to quarantine for 14 days before they begin their studies.

Want to Study in Canada this Fall?

Whether the applicant is in Canada or outside the country, a study permit application should be submitted in online mode.

Along with their applications, international applicants need to submit the letter of acceptance from the designated learning institution (DLI), as many documents required for a complete application and a letter of explanation for the documents one has failed to submit due to Covid-19.

For the francophone province of Quebec, applicants will have to undergo further steps including applying for a CAQ or Qubec Acceptance Certificate. Those still awaiting their CAQ can submit their evidence that their online application for temporary selection has been received. Following this, Ottawa will process the application and put it on hold until the applicant receives their CAQ which will finalise their application.

The Immigration Ministry of Quebec is asking international students to apply for temporary selection through the portal of Arrima Expression of Interest, as soon as possible.

Quebec is keen on attracting more international students over the next three years, for which it has earmarked $9.1 million in the latest budget.

According to a Statistics Canada study, the number of international students in Canada grew from 101,304 to 318,153 during the decade that closed in the 2018-19 academic year.
