Europe: Rent Costs Likely to Get Expensive for Int'l Students

International students may need to pay extra for their accommodation as rental property prices hike in Europe according to a research by HousingAnywhere.

A recently published International Rent Index Report for Q1 2022 states that the rental prices in Europe have jumped to 14.5 per cent in the past year, adding that Paris has become the most expensive city in the country for both a private room and 1BHK apartment. It said that a bedroom apartment now costs a whopping EUR 1,978 per month in Paris, followed closely by London which averaged at EUR 1,940.

The spike in rental property prices has exceeded than pre-pandemic days.

Amongst the 22 European cities analysed in the research, only two recorded a drop in rental costs. In Helsinki, a decrease of 5.9 per cent was witnessed in the last year for private rooms, while Brussels registered a 1.1 per cent drop.

Commenting on the development, President of Erasmus Student Network Juan Rayón said that the dialogues between universities, local authorities and housing providers should be expanded to give international students a better experience.

He added that high rental costs are not the only problem students face. They also fall prey to fraud and at least 10% of foreign students have issues with accommodation.

Situations like scamming, accommodation quality issues and others can get traumatic for students and affect the development of the mobility experience, said Rayón.
