Indian Applicants Appearing 1st Time for US Student Visa Interviews 'Have Best Chance of Approval This Year'

Making an important announcement, Minister-counselor for consular affairs at the US embassy in Delhi, Donald L Heflin said that the best time for Indian applicants to get their visa approved is the first interview this year, asserting that this can be done by blocking students who refused a US visa for the first time.

In a 30-minute Facebook live video regarding different categories of non-immigrant visas, the American diplomat said applicants with F-1 student visas from India have a good chance to get their visa approved this year, in the first interview. While the chances of getting refused on a second or third interview are comparatively high.

Explaining the policy change, Heflin added that to give fresh applicants a chance to study in the USA, they need to block out the people who refused a student visa earlier.

Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the US embassy and consulates in India commenced the student visa interviews quite late around mid-June. This year, they are planning to start student visa interviews earlier in mid-May, hoping to issue even more student visas than in the year 2021, which was around 62,000.

Heflin stated that students who refused visas two or more times or students who were turned down for visas in Spring this year and were targeting to apply for Summer are unlikely to get interview slots again this year.
