With many other international universities going optional for standardised tests, the Michigan State University in East Lansing will continue to adjourn the requirements of submitting SAT and ACT test scores for the next five years.

Michigan State University Adjourns SAT and ACT Exam Scores Until 2026

ACT and SAT scores will remain optional for prospective Michigan State University undergraduate students until at least 2026.

Transfer and international students are not required to submit ACT scores or SAT scores, but they may do so if they like. The test-optional application process is reserved for incoming freshmen only.

While MSU states that there are no minimum prerequisites for entering international students, it does state that admission is competitive.

The pilot programme, which began in 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, intends to break down barriers to higher education to allow more access to students.

School officials picked a six-year period to assess retention and graduation rate trends for students who did not submit their test scores while applying.

According to John Ambrose, executive director of admissions at Michigan State University, the decision resulted from an unexpected scenario caused by COVID and students lacking the capacity or ability to test.

The most recent freshman class at MSU includes 9,290 admitted students, an increase of 8% from the prior year.

MSU garnered around 5,000 more applications than the prior two years, and class diversity surged across a variety of categories. Furthermore, approximately half of the enrolled freshmen class chose not to include ACT/SAT scores.

Individual academic success in high school, the strength and quality of their curriculum, class rank, current trends in their academic performance, leadership skills, conduct, abilities, and diversity of experience will all be considered by the university in the absence of test scores.

The admissions staff can compare an individual to other students from the same high school who have similar grades, and then examine how those applicants performed throughout their first semester at MSU.

The combination of evaluation metrics can be as reliable as standardised test scores.

If a student chooses not to send their ACT or SAT results, no further information is required in their place, said Ambrose.

The application period for the academic year 2022-23 is now closed. The deadline for admissions for the upcoming academic year is February 1, 2023.
